Join our Grounds Maintenance Team and help keep our parks, sports facilities and public spaces looking their best. We are looking for a Seasonal Gardener to join our grounds' maintenance team and play an important role in maintaining high-quality green spaces and horticultural facilities for the local community. This is a practical, varied role suited to someone who enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in their work and can work effectively as part of a team.
You'll be involved in everything from grass cutting and hedge maintenance to sports turf preparation, planting, weed control and general grounds maintenance.
What you'll be doing
- Operating a range of horticultural machinery and equipment, including pedestrian and ride-on grass cutting machinery, hedge cutters, cultivation equipment and sports turf machinery.
- Carrying out ground maintenance work including grass cutting, hedge cutting, pruning, planting, fertilising and weed control.
- Maintaining floral displays, grass areas, fine turf, play parks and other horticultural features.
- Preparing and maintaining sports facilities, including setting out, line marking and turf renovation.
- Carrying out general parks and public space cleansing, including litter collection, leaf collection and path cleansing.
- Cleaning and maintaining equipment and work areas to a high standard.
- Safely storing, calibrating and recording the use of horticultural chemicals and carrying out weed control.
- Carrying out inspections of play parks and other facilities as required.
- Acting as a keyholder for grounds maintenance facilities when required.
- Driving Council vehicles where appropriate and assisting with traffic management, signage and lane closures when required.
- Supporting community events and, when required, assisting with other operational duties such as street cleansing, salting and cemetery operations.
- Supporting the Council's Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP) and identifying opportunities to improve biodiversity.
- Using IT equipment, software and mobile devices appropriately where provided.
- Working collaboratively with colleagues to improve efficiency, effectiveness and the quality of public services.
- Undertaking other duties appropriate to the level and nature of the role as directed by management.
Essential
- At least one year's experience working in a horticultural environment with a public interface.
- At least one year's experience using a range of horticultural machinery and hand tools safely.
- A good understanding of health and safety and practical risk assessments.
- The ability to provide a high-quality, customer-focused service in a public-facing environment.
- The ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- A willingness to undertake relevant training and professional development.
Desirable
- NVQ Level 2 in Horticulture, Turf Culture or an equivalent qualification.
- PA1/PA6 Certificate of Competence in the application of pesticides.
- Two years' experience working in a horticultural environment with a public interface.
- Two years' experience using horticultural chemicals, machinery and hand tools safely.
- A C1+E driving licence.
Other requirements
- A valid driving licence and access to suitable transport to fulfil the requirements of the role.
- Appropriate reasonable adjustments will be considered for applicants with disabilities who are unable to hold a driving licence.
- To work towards achieving a PA1/PA6 Certificate of Competence within 12 months of appointment if you do not already hold this qualification.
- Flexibility to work outside normal hours, including evenings, weekends and public holidays, depending on service requirements.
- To complete a medical questionnaire and pre-employment Drugs and Alcohol Screening as part of the appointment process.
- To undertake a Council driving assessment as part of the selection process.
