Assistant Lawyer - Regulatory / HSE / Inquests

A leading specialist Crime & Regulatory team is looking to recruit an ambitious Assistant Lawyer to join its highly regarded practice in Leeds. This is an excellent opportunity for a lawyer with experience or a strong interest in regulatory, criminal defence, health & safety, inquests, transport or food safety law to work alongside recognised experts in the field.
Working closely with senior lawyers on complex and high-profile matters, you will play a key role in defending businesses and individuals facing investigations and prosecutions brought by regulatory authorities.
The Opportunity
- Health & Safety Executive (HSE) investigations
- Local Authority prosecutions
- Food safety matters
- Serious and fatal workplace accidents
- Inquest proceedings
- Police investigations and PACE interviews
- Road traffic offences involving death or serious injury
- DVSA and Traffic Commissioner regulatory proceedings
- Haulage and PSV operator matters
The team acts for companies, partnerships and individuals from the earliest stages of an investigation through to prosecution, providing strategic advice and representation throughout the process.
The Role
- Assisting with regulatory and criminal defence matters
- Reviewing and analysing evidence and disclosure
- Collating and managing case documentation
- Taking witness statements
- Drafting instructions to Counsel and expert witnesses
- Attending court hearings and inquests
- Supporting clients during investigations and interviews under caution
- Developing relationships with insurer and commercial clients
- Progressively managing your own caseload as experience develops

About You
- Experience in criminal law, regulatory law, health & safety, inquests, transport regulatory work or a closely related area
- Strong advocacy and client care skills
- Excellent drafting and organisational abilities
- A proactive and commercial approach
- The ability to work collaboratively within a specialist team
- A willingness to attend courts, police stations and client meetings when required
Candidates with broader criminal defence experience who are looking to develop into regulatory work are also encouraged to apply.

- Salary £45,000 to £52,000 per annum

Location
This position is based in Leeds. Candidates should be located within a reasonable commuting distance and able to attend the office one day a week in line with the firm's hybrid working policy, as well as travel to courts and police stations when required.
