This is an apprenticeship post that will be paid under annex 21 A at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will study the 'Level 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker (Theatres pathway)', which is a fantastic opportunity to start a successful career within the Theatres department. There will be many opportunities for career progression following completion of this Apprenticeship.

In order to be eligible for Apprenticeship funding from the ESFA, applicants must:

  • Have the right to work in England.
  • Have been ordinarily resident in the UK or EEA for at least the previous three years before the start of the apprenticeship.

A unique opportunity has arisen due to service expansion and development in the Furness General (Barrow) Operating Department to join the existing theatre team. Work in support of and under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN)/Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) providing perioperative care and assistance to patients within defined parameters specified by the RN/ODP. Provide basic patient care and document that care in the patient records. Contribute to the on-call service.

We are seeking an enthusiastic person to join our multi-disciplinary team in providing care for patients during their time in the Operating Theatre Department. You will help prepare the theatre, support qualified staff with care of patients through all areas, and participate in cleaning of clinical and staff areas. Duties include the transport of patients within our department and others. Participation in provision of a 24-hour service including shift work, on-call, weekends, and night duty is a requirement of this post.

The successful candidate will be studying for the 'Level 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker (Theatres Pathway)' Apprenticeship and will be expected to attend college and complete coursework and other study as the Apprenticeship requires. 20% of their working week will be given to accommodate their Apprenticeship study.

This post will be paid as a training post in line with Annex 2118623.pdf (nhsemployers.org):

  • (i) up to 12 months prior to completion of training: 75 per cent of the pay band maximum of the fully qualified rate;
  • (ii) more than one but less than two years prior to completion of training: 70 per cent of the pay band maximum of the qualified rate;

On assimilation to the pay band following completion of training, the trainee will enter either on the first pay point of the appropriate pay band or the next pay point above their training salary.

We operate from three main hospitals: Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre. FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units, and various Consultant-led services. WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life-threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses. All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case, and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
