The haematology and oncology wards at the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre (BHOC) are recruiting a senior staff nurse. We are a dedicated team of compassionate and skilled professionals looking for a new member of our senior nursing team. You will bring clinical expertise, leadership experience and a practical understanding of what excellent quality care looks like.

D703 is a purpose-built, 25 bedded, combined adult Haematology and Stem Cell Transplant Unit. We specialise in stem cell transplants for which we have 7 specialist ventilation rooms. Providing expert care and treatment for patients with malignant and non-malignant haematological conditions, including lymphoma, leukaemia and myeloma, as well as sickle cell disease. The patients are supported by a team of expert clinical nurse specialists, a vast multidisciplinary team, and the bone marrow coordination team.

As a teaching and learning Foundation Trust, the unit offers education and training via dedicated clinical educators who support the unit. We encourage a nurse led focus and offer a wide range of training opportunities to provide our nurses with the knowledge and confidence. The successful candidate should have significant experience in a relevant specialism. You will be expected to work the full range of shifts including long days, night shifts, shorter shifts and weekends.

The applicant must be able to:

  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate evidence based, individualised patient care.
  • Carry out planned care for a group of patients without direct supervision.
  • Manage patient care according to agreed policies and protocols, taking appropriate action, seeking advice from other members of the multi-disciplinary team as necessary. This will include identification of risk (clinical, health, safety and security).
  • Lead the nursing team on a day to day basis under the management and guidance of the ward sister/charge nurse.
  • Assist with bed management and flow, liaising with other departments across the trust.
  • Assist with supporting elective demands.
  • Work with the practice education facilitator to provide training on the ward to staff.
  • Closely monitor patients’ status, ensuring all relevant observations/patient assessment criteria are accurately recorded and interpreted to ensure appropriate and timely corrective action is taken in accordance with current protocols, e.g. sepsis.
  • Undertake advanced nursing practices relevant to the clinical area including venepuncture, cannulation, administration of intravenous chemotherapy, Stem Cell Transplants and blood products.
