Personal Assistants wanted to help three young children with autism safely access the community, enjoy new experiences and develop their own hobbies and interests.

About the role

We are looking for caring, reliable and enthusiastic Personal Assistants (PAs) to provide one-to-one support for three young children. The aim of the role is to help each child safely access the community, enjoy activities suited to their individual interests and have valuable time away from their siblings. We would love for the children to have more opportunities to develop hobbies, try new activities and experience things independently with the support of a trusted PA.

Each child has very different needs, interests and personalities, so the role will involve getting to know the individual child and supporting them in a way that works for them. Activities could include visiting parks, swimming, sensory activities, walks, children's play centres, going for drives or exploring other suitable community activities based on each child's interests and comfort levels.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Supporting the children to safely access the community.
  • Providing constant supervision and ensuring the child's safety at all times.
  • Supporting one child at a time to enjoy activities away from their siblings.
  • Being patient, understanding and responsive to each child's individual needs.
  • Helping the children explore and develop hobbies and interests.
  • Supporting children who may become overwhelmed or dysregulated.
  • Recognising the child's individual communication and behavioural cues.
  • Building a trusting and positive relationship with the child over time.
  • Encouraging the children to experience new activities while respecting their individual limits and needs.
  • Following the family's guidance and any agreed safety arrangements.

Hourly Rate: £12.71

Hours Per Week: 8 hours 2:1 support in term time + 28 hours 2:1 support in school holidays.

How will the hours be used: In term time I would only like weekends preferably morning or afternoons, I'm flexible with either. But the holidays I'm open to any days of the week or weekends whatever works best for everyone.

About the Children

Child 1 - Age 8

The child is autistic, pre-verbal and communicates using some single words. They are obsessed with all things Peppa Pig! They love going to parks and have recently really enjoyed swimming at school. We are particularly keen for them to have the opportunity to go swimming on a Sunday with their PA, if possible. They require constant supervision as they are not aware of dangers around them. They can become overwhelmed and distressed, particularly when visiting unfamiliar places, and may harm themselves when distressed. A calm, patient and understanding PA who can help them feel safe and supported would be ideal.

Child 2 - Age 6

The child is autistic and extremely energetic - they are always on the go! They love being outdoors and enjoy going for walks. They also like visiting places such as Wacky Warehouse and sensory rooms. They love anything with wheels, including bikes, cars, trucks and buses. They can become dysregulated at times and may harm themselves when overwhelmed. They also like to run off, so they require constant supervision to keep them safe. Someone who is friendly, energetic and able to keep up with them while helping them enjoy their interests would be a great fit.

Child 3 - Age 5

The child is autistic and completely non-verbal. They love going out in the car and enjoy going for drives. They also like short walks but aren't particularly keen on busy places and can be sensitive to noise. They are a real people person and love adult interaction, including tickles and playful interaction. They would benefit from someone who is warm, patient and engaging, and who is able to understand and respond to their individual communication and cues.
