The main task of a General Farm Operative will be working outside in a field as part of a team of operatives planting root leeks. Another task that will be done by field operatives is hand weeding. During adverse weather conditions when planting cannot take place, other tasks will be distributed across other areas of the business depending on the needs of the business.
Key Tasks
- Working on the back of a leek planter, which could either be placing bare root leeks on a belt, loading trays or following behind the planter to ensure leeks are planted accurately.
- If sat on the planter, it is expected that the bare root leeks are placed accurately on the belt to ensure uniform planting.
- If loading trays, ensure there is a steady supply to each operative.
- If following behind the planter, you will be filling in the gaps with fresh plants, straightening leeks and visually checking planting.
- At the end of each planting run, it is expected that everyone loads up the planter for the next one.
- To maintain the required productivity targets set by the manager. Depending on the weather conditions/plant availability, other duties may be assigned where required.
The key job tasks will take place on different fields around the local area. The jobholder will be required to work on a planter alongside other colleagues in a team. The jobholder may be required to work in other areas of the business to meet specific demands, such as on our rig harvester and/or in the leek packhouse. Planting will take place outside during the beginning of summer with average temperatures of 18-23 degrees during the day. Planting will take place primarily in dry conditions, but the weather can be unpredictable. If it does rain, the planters are covered. It can also be colder during the morning, so wearing layers is advisable. During the drier months when it’s windy, dust can be an irritant.
