Shift Pattern: 4 on / 4 off, 12-hour rota
The POC Engineer plays a critical role in ensuring the reliability and performance of the APFN network. You will be responsible for proactively monitoring network infrastructure, responding to incidents, and working collaboratively with internal teams to resolve issues efficiently and minimise service impact. This role suits someone with strong technical expertise, a calm and methodical approach under pressure, and a passion for delivering high-quality network services in a fast-moving telecoms environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Continuously monitor APFN network infrastructure, including switches, routers, servers, and supporting systems
- Identify, investigate, and respond to network incidents, outages, and performance degradation
- Diagnose issues, determine root cause, and implement effective corrective actions
- Log and manage incidents via ServiceNow (SNOW), ensuring accurate records and timely updates
- Maintain up-to-date network documentation, diagrams, and logs
- Carry out routine maintenance such as firmware upgrades, patching, and hardware replacement
- Collaborate with network engineers, system administrators, and other internal teams on complex issues
- Analyse network performance data and contribute to ongoing optimisation and capacity planning
- Support network security by following established policies and responding to security incidents
- Use network monitoring and management tools (e.g. SNMP, NMS) to track and improve performance
- Work on a 4 on / 4 off shift basis, including 12-hour shifts
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work effectively in high-pressure, incident-driven environments
- Clear and confident communication skills
- Experience using network monitoring and management tools
- Solid understanding of network technologies and protocols including: TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, VLANs, MPLS
Desirable:
- Experience working with multi-vendor environments (Juniper, Cisco, Nokia)
- Background in telecoms or service provider networks
