Alloyed is a young venture-funded company of about 150 world-class metallurgists, engineers, and software developers working across 3 sites in the UK, 1 in Japan, and 1 in Seattle to build the future of advanced metal components. To do this it uses proprietary software packages which combine advanced machine learning and physical modelling to invent better alloys, devise better ways to process them, and design better 3D-printed components.

The Role

Alloyed is currently designing a microturbine engine for jet propulsion applications. The system architecture is simple, with outer diameters ranging between 60-240mm considered. The objective of Alloyed’s development programme is to use additive manufacturing to increase performance compared to current state-of-the-art by leveraging more complex designs enabled by additive manufacture and through application of more thermally resistant materials. In parallel, the target is to consolidate the number of parts in the engine, reduce production cost and enable high production rate.

Alloyed is seeking a motivated Mechanical Design Engineer to support the design & prototyping of microturbines across different thrust ranges. This role involves close collaboration with experimental teams to validate and improve designs. You will report to the Design Lead and play a key role in optimizing jet engines.

You will be based at Alloyed’s manufacturing site in Abingdon. A highly competitive remuneration package is offered, including equity incentives.

Responsibilities

  • Creating and iterating on 3D CAD models of components and assemblies, ensuring alignment with functional and manufacturing requirements.
  • Developing and releasing detailed technical drawings and documentation for manufacturing, inspection, and assembly.
  • Working closely with simulation, manufacturing and experimental teams to ensure seamless integration of design updates.
  • Contributing to mechanical layout and packaging of components within spatial, thermal, and structural constraints.
  • Supporting design reviews, maintaining high standards of clarity and accuracy.
  • Maintaining organized version control and file management within PLM/CAD environments.
  • Assisting in rapid prototyping and design-for-manufacture evaluations during early development phases.
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Product Design Engineering (or equivalent).
  • 1+ years of industry experience in a mechanical/product design role.
  • Proficient in CAD tools (e.g. SolidWorks, Autodesk Fusion, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of design for manufacture and assembly (DFMA) principles, in particular for rotating components.
  • Experience producing technical drawings to relevant standards (e.g. GD&T, ISO/ASME).
  • Excellent problem-solving and design iteration skills.
  • Highly detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage design tasks independently.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate in cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with metal additive manufacturing design constraints and approaches.
  • Knowledge of PLM systems and collaborative design workflows.
  • Experience in other CAD tools (Rhino-Grasshoper, Siemens NX etc)
  • Experience in life cycle analysis of components
  • Familiarity with design validation techniques (e.g., prototyping, tolerance stack-ups, basic FEA).
  • Interest or experience in high-performance components, such as in aerospace, consumer electronics, or precision devices.

How to Apply

To apply, submit a CV and a supporting statement by email to jobs@alloyed.com. The supporting statement should explain how you meet the selection criteria for the role using examples of your skills and any experience. All documents should be uploaded as PDF files. Please provide details of two referees and indicate if we can contact them now.

This is a continuous recruitment effort. We will fill positions as excellent candidates present themselves so your early application is encouraged.
