Role Overview

The Production Assembly Team Leader is responsible for leading, coordinating, and supporting a team of assembly technicians to ensure production targets are met safely, on time, and to the required quality standards. The role combines hands-on leadership with day-to-day production control, continuous improvement, and people management.

Responsibilities

Production & Operations:

  • Lead daily assembly operations to meet safety, quality, delivery, and cost targets
  • Allocate tasks and balance workload across the team of technicians
  • Ensure work is carried out in accordance with work instructions, SOPs, and build specifications
  • Monitor production output, identify bottlenecks, and take corrective action
  • Support line changeovers, product introductions, and engineering builds
  • Escalate issues relating to equipment, materials, or planning in a timely manner

People Leadership:

  • Provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, and support to assembly technicians
  • Act as first point of contact for attendance, performance, and conduct issues
  • Carry out toolbox talks, shift handovers, and daily production briefings
  • Support training, skills development, and competency tracking
  • Assist with performance reviews, objectives, and development plans

Quality:

  • Ensure products are built right first time to defined quality standards
  • Promote quality ownership and defect prevention
  • Support root cause analysis and corrective actions
  • Ensure documentation, traceability, and inspection records are completed accurately

Health & Safety:

  • Ensure compliance with H&S policies, risk assessments, and safe systems of work
  • Lead by example on safe working practices and PPE usage
  • Report and investigate near misses, incidents, and hazards
  • Maintain housekeeping and 5S standards in the assembly area

Continuous Improvement:

  • Identify process improvement and waste reduction opportunities
  • Support Lean, Kaizen, and CI initiatives
  • Work with Engineering, Quality, and Planning to improve build efficiency

Essential skills

  • Proven experience in a manufacturing or assembly environment
  • Previous experience as team leader, supervisor, or senior operator
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and manage a small to medium size production team
  • Strong understanding of assembly processes, quality standards, and SOPs
  • Good problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing, 5S, or CI tools
  • Understanding of production KPIs (output, efficiency, scrap, downtime)
  • Experience working to ISO 9001 or similar quality systems
  • Basic IT skills (ERP, MRP, production reporting)
  • Calm and organised under pressure
  • Hands-on and proactive leadership style
  • Fair and professional people management approach
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Team-oriented with a continuous improvement mindset
