Job Description: Performs waived to highly complex medical laboratory tests in different areas of the lab. May have oversight as a key operator of a work area and participates in the development of technical procedures, forms, miscellaneous documents, method validation, and implementation. Trains students and new employees, and participates in the direct observation of staff for the annual competency program. Additionally, may function as Charge Tech in absence of Lead/Supervisor/Manager.
CLIA Role: Testing Personnel Moderate complexity testing; Testing Personnel High Complexity testing.
Principle Responsibilities:
- Performs waived to highly complex laboratory procedures.
- Performs analytical testing according to policies, procedures and federal regulations including CAP, OSHA, COLA, CLIA, and HIPAA.
- Evaluates results for accuracy and resolves complex test problems.
- Recognizes, communicates, and documents results that require action.
- Performs and documents routine & advanced instrument maintenance and quality control; takes appropriate remedial action.
- Ensures appropriate record keeping and retention.
- Accurate and timely collection and processing of specimens.
- Instructs customers on collection procedures and protocols.
- Verifies correct patient identification.
- Identifies and uses appropriate collection method to obtain samples for testing (venipuncture or capillary puncture).
- Collects samples, and labels specimens.
- Evaluates specimen acceptability.
- Customer service and patient order management.
- Greets patients, performs check-in process, and responds to patient’s questions and needs.
- Evaluates patient orders for completeness and follows up as needed.
- Ensures adherence to regulatory and billing requirements.
- Performs scheduling, ordering and releasing of patient orders in the electronic medical record.
- Administrative duties.
- Stocks, rotates and requests supplies on a regular basis.
- Participates in departmental or system wide meetings, projects, or committees as required.
- Performs various clerical duties.
- May assist with department scheduling.
- Participates in the development of technical procedures, forms, miscellaneous documents, method validation, and implementation of new technologies.
- Maintains safety, education, and competency requirements.
- Participates in the training of employees and students.
- Assists in Direct Observations of staff for annual competency program.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a related laboratory field including clinical rotations or equivalent routes as specified in CLIA '88.
- Licenses/Certifications: Possess or is eligible to receive appropriate HHS approved laboratory certification (ASCP or AMT). If not certified, must obtain certification within 180 Days required.
Physical Demands: Light Work: Lifting weight Up to 20 lbs. occasionally, Up to 10 lbs. frequently.
Pay Range: $32.20 to $44.13 per hour. The pay described reflects the base hiring pay range. Your starting rate would depend on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, your experience, education, and the union agreement (if applicable). Shift, weekend and/or other differentials may be available to increase your pay rate for certain shifts or work.
