About The Role

At Allied Care, the safety and wellbeing of our service users, staff, and premises is our highest priority. As a General Maintenance Operative, you will play a key role in ensuring that our care home and grounds are maintained to a high standard, contributing to a safe, comfortable, and well‑functioning environment for those who live and work there. This role is based at our service in Romford and Hornchurch. You will work closely with the Home Manager and wider team to ensure maintenance tasks are effectively prioritised and completed, supporting the smooth running of the home and the wellbeing of our service users.

About You

  • Previous maintenance experience, preferably within a health or social care setting
  • Good literacy and numeracy skills
  • A general knowledge of household maintenance
  • The ability to identify when specialist contractors are required and advise accordingly
  • A qualification in one area of maintenance (e.g., plumbing) is desirable but not essential, as full training will be provided
  • Suitable driving licence to drive the home’s minibus for people with learning disabilities

Contract & Hours

Full‑time contract, 40 hours per week. Monday to Friday, 8:00am – 4:00pm. Participation in an emergency on‑call rota, with paid call‑outs where required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Liaising with the Home Manager to prioritise and complete maintenance tasks
  • Carrying Out General Maintenance Across The Care Home, Including:
  • Moving furniture
  • Mowing and weeding
  • Clearing drains and soil pipes
  • Painting and decorating, and hanging pictures
  • Repairing minor leaks and changing taps
  • Undertaking ladder work where necessary
  • Ensuring all ventilation units and lighting are kept clean and in good working order, including replacing defective bulbs or diffusers
  • Reporting and liaising with the Home Manager or delegated staff regarding maintenance requirements
  • Ensuring all maintenance equipment is clean, safe, and well maintained
  • Checking control panels and electrical wiring to identify potential issues
  • Performing minor repairs such as fixing broken locks and filling wall gaps
  • Installing appliances and equipment where required
  • Checking the functionality of safety systems
  • Inspecting and troubleshooting equipment and building systems
  • Maintaining accurate records of maintenance tasks identified and completed
  • Managing a small maintenance budget and keeping clear records of expenditure
