About Allica Bank
Allica is the UKās fastest growing company – and the fastest-growing financial technology (Fintech) firm ever. Our purpose is to help established SMEs, one of the last major underserved opportunities in Fintech.
Established SMEs are the backbone of local communities – representing over a third of our economy – yet have been largely neglected both by traditional high street banks and modern fintech providers.
What\’s the opportunity?
This is an exciting new role at Allica. As our first Design Engineer, you\’ll be embedded in the Spend Management squad, working on tools that help SMEs take control of spending, set limits, track transactions, and simplify admin.
You\’ll play at the intersection of design and engineering: rapidly prototyping, refining, and bringing ideas to life in production. You\’ll help evolve and define what design engineering means at Allica, building a bridge from Figma to production code – powered by AI-assisted design-to-code processes.
If you thrive in ambiguous, creative environments and love pushing the boundaries of design and technology, this is your chance to shape a new chapter for our team.
What will you be doing?
Design & Code
- Prototype ideas quickly, with Figma Make and V0, then test and validate user experiences.
- Design end-to-end experiences in Figma which is the source of truth.
- Leverage AI-assisted design-to-code tools ā such as Figma Dev Mode MCP, and GitHub Copilot ā to translate high-fidelity designs into functional, high quality code for our web and mobile products.
- Help evolve our design system to ensure consistency, scalability, and seamless integration with engineering.
- Create real, usable experiences from static design files.
Collaboration & Process
- Work closely with designers, engineers, and product managers to deliver end-to-end solutions.
- Act as a connector between design and engineering teams, improving communication, shared understanding and expediting design-to-code handover.
- Help define and champion best practices for the new design engineer role.
- Share learnings and contribute to growing our design engineering capability from the ground up.
Growth & Impact
- Shape the definition of the Design Engineer role at Allica and influence how we deliver great experiences to our customers.
- Mentor and support team members interested in bridging design and code.
- Continuously explore new tools, workflows, and techniques ā especially in the rapidly evolving space of AI-assisted design and development.
About You
At Allica, we care about how you think and collaborate as much as your technical skills. You\’re someone who:
- Has a portfolio of work across responsive web and/or native mobile apps.
- Makes thoughtful, user-focused design decisions backed by data and insight.
- Works independently but knows when to involve others and ask questions.
- Communicates clearly and shares the reasoning behind work.
- Balances speed and quality – knowing when to iterate and when to polish.
- Gives and receives feedback constructively.
- Is naturally collaborative – you enjoy working with others to solve problems.
- Enjoys working in ambiguous spaces and shaping new processes and practices.
- Is excited about AI-assisted design-to-code workflows and curious to experiment with emerging tools.
- Produces high-quality frontend code using JavaScript, TypeScript, and React (including Hooks).
- Builds confidence through unit and integration testing with Jest and React Testing Library.
- Familiarity with end-to-end testing using Playwright or Cypress is a bonus.
- Has experience contributing to or building design systems.
- Is familiar with accessibility principles and inclusive design practices.
The Interview Process

After that, weāll ask you a few interview questions. For this session, Phil will be joined by a front-end engineer and a product owner.
- Home design / eng task (4hrs) – a hypothetical challenge, where youāll showcase your product thinking, creativity, execution, and use of AI.
- Bar raiser (30 mins) ā A culture interview with an independent Allican, who is outside of your team and squad. Youāll be asked structured, behavioural questions to evaluate your skills, decision[1]making, and how you embody Allicaās values
