We currently have a great opportunity to work in our Commercial Lines Mid-Market Portfolio Steering team as an Underwriting Portfolio Analyst, with a particular focus on Construction, Engineering & Energy (CEE). This role would be perfect for an ambitious underwriter or analyst with direct CEE or broader Commercial P&C experience, looking to be more involved in strategic activities, gain exposure to senior stakeholders and looking to upskill in analytical capabilities or underwriting expertise.
You will contribute to the development, production and analysis of data, using appropriate data feeds to create actionable business insight to the Account Teams, providing greatest depth of analysis and insight to support portfolio decision making. The Mid-Market Portfolio Steering team sits within the Commercial Technical department and closely works with the Underwriting Account teams, Underwriting branches, Pricing, Data, Claims and Actuarial teams to provide recommendations and decisions to support the profitable management of the Mid-Market lines of business.
Responsibilities:
- Analysing, manipulating and exploring data to understand portfolio performance against corporate plan objectives and to generate insight to support Underwriting Account Teams to steer portfolios.
- Producing and presenting steering insights on a regular basis to underwriting teams, informing stakeholders how best to act on current trends affecting the portfolio.
- Providing appropriate data production and reporting where needed, and developing the tools to enable efficient assessment of month‑on‑month results.
- Working with data teams to produce data sets for new analysis, tooling and products, including liaising with the underwriting regions and account teams to understand emerging data needs.
- Work alongside the pricing team to shape, develop and embed new and existing pricing methodologies into the portfolio rhythm, and to develop appropriate trading tactics using price as a lever.

Qualifications:
- Experience working within a Commercial Lines underwriting environment with strong financial awareness.
- Proven ability to understand key underwriting concepts and principles.
- Understanding of commercial insurance data and metrics, and how these flow through to results and performance monitoring.
- Able to establish and maintain credible internal and external relationships with key stakeholders.
- Strong interpersonal skills including excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent Microsoft Office skills, particularly in Excel, or a strong desire to upskill in this area.
- Knowledge or understanding of SAS, SQL or equivalent programming languages preferable but not essential, or a strong desire to upskill in this area.
