Overview
As Indirect Tax Manager, you will be the subject matter expert for indirect taxes, delivering compliance, reporting, advisory and risk management across VAT and IPT. You will lead a small team of tax accountants, shape governance and controls, and advise stakeholders across Finance, Operations, Underwriting, Claims, Procurement and Technology. You will drive process improvements and automation to enhance tax efficiency while navigating a complex regulatory landscape. Responsibilities
- Lead preparation and review of VAT, IPT and other indirect tax returns ensuring compliance and deadlines
- Manage and coach tax accountants supporting the role
- Provide specialist indirect tax advice to multiple stakeholders across functions
- Support business change and transformation projects with early indirect tax involvement
- Maintain and enhance indirect tax governance, controls, and risk management frameworks
- Proactively manage HMRC inquiries, audits, and information requests
- Identify opportunities to improve indirect tax processes, systems, and controls through automation and continuous improvement
- Monitor regulatory developments and communicate recommendations to stakeholders
- Build relationships with key stakeholders for commercially focused tax guidance
- Support and develop colleagues within the wider tax function
Key requirements
- Fully qualified CTA or equivalent professional qualification
- Proven experience in UK indirect taxes (VAT and IPT)
- Experience in the insurance sector or partially exempt business with partial exemption methodologies and VAT recovery principles
- Extensive knowledge of indirect tax compliance, reporting and governance
- Experience managing indirect tax risk and controls
- Ability to interpret complex tax legislation and communicate to non-tax stakeholders
- Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills
