An interesting position has arisen for a Senior / Principal Remediation Engineer to lead and deliver complex contaminated land remediation projects, with a particular focus on emerging contaminants including PFAS. This role will involve technical leadership across a portfolio of remediation projects, including commercial remediation schemes and innovative treatment solutions. You will take ownership of projects from concept through to completion, including site investigation design, remediation strategy development, regulatory engagement, and validation. You will act as a technical expert, providing guidance to internal teams and clients, while also supporting business growth, mentoring junior staff, and ensuring best practice in remediation.
Technical Leadership & Delivery
- Lead the design, implementation and management of complex contaminated land and water remediation projects;
- Act as a subject matter expert in remediation selection, design, technologies and costings;
- Develop and oversee remediation strategies including in-situ and ex-situ treatment methodologies;
- Provide technical input into client tenders, feasibility studies, options appraisals and remediation design;
- Ensure compliance with UK regulatory frameworks (e.g. EA / SEPA / NIEA guidance) and emerging PFAS guidance;
Project & Commercial Management
- Take full ownership of projects from initial scoping through to validation and closure;
- Prepare and review cost estimates, tenders and commercial proposals;
- Manage project budgets, programmes and risk registers;
- Provide technical assurance and quality control across reporting and deliverables;
Stakeholder Engagement
- Lead engagement with clients, regulators, subcontractors and suppliers;
- Represent the company in technical discussions with regulatory authorities and stakeholders;
- Support business development through client relationship management and work-winning activities;
Site & Operational Oversight
- Provide supervision and technical direction for site investigations and remediation works;
- Oversee contractors including drilling crews, groundworkers and specialist remediation subcontractors;
- Ensure high standards of health, safety and environmental compliance on site;
Reporting & Technical Documentation
- Produce and review high-quality technical reports including remediation strategies and method statements;
- Validation and verification reports;
- Interpret environmental data to inform risk assessments and remedial decisions;
Sampling & Analysis
- Design and oversee soil, groundwater and surface water sampling programmes;
- Guide analytical requirements, particularly for PFAS and other complex contaminants;
- Interpret laboratory data and ensure data quality objectives are met;
Team Development
- Mentor and support junior engineers and consultants;
- Provide technical training and share best practice across the team;
- Contribute to developing internal standards, procedures and innovation;
Essential Criteria
- Significant experience in contaminated land and remediation engineering;
- Demonstrable expertise in PFAS investigation and remediation;
- Strong understanding of UK contaminated land legislation and regulatory frameworks;
- Proven track record in delivering complex remediation projects;
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with a focus on practical and cost-effective solutions;
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage at all levels;
- Ability to operate effectively both on site and in an office-based technical role;
- Degree level qualification or similar in a relevant discipline;
- Strong IT skills, including data analysis and reporting tools;
- Full UK Driving Licence;
- Willingness to travel to project sites across the UK and Ireland;
Desirable Criteria
- Chartered status (e.g CEng, CSci, SiLC or working towards);
- Experience with innovative or advanced remediation technologies (e.g. PFAS treatment, thermal remediation, chemical oxidation, stabilisation/solidification);
- Working knowledge of PFAS site investigation, sampling and risk assessment;
- Experience in managing multidisciplinary teams and large-scale projects;
- Knowledge of emerging contaminants beyond PFAS;
