A well‑established UK engineering and environmental consultancy is looking to appoint a Principal Hydrologist as part of its continued growth within the water and land development space. The role can be based from several regional offices across the UK, with flexibility for remote working and occasional travel.
The business supports major development projects across the full lifecycle, from site acquisition and planning through to detailed design, statutory approvals and construction support. Ongoing investment in technical capability has created an opportunity for an experienced hydrologist to take a senior role, providing leadership across complex projects while helping to shape the future direction of the hydrology function.
The successful candidate will lead the delivery of high‑quality hydrological inputs, including Flood Risk Assessments, Environmental Impact Assessments and drainage strategies. You will manage projects to agreed programmes and budgets, act as a key technical interface for clients and stakeholders, and take responsibility for reviewing modelling, calculations and reports produced by colleagues.
The role also involves regular engagement with Lead Local Flood Authorities, the Environment Agency and other statutory consultees, as well as supporting business development activity and maintaining consistently high technical standards across the team. Alongside technical delivery, you will play an important role in mentoring and developing junior hydrologists and engineers, while keeping up to date with changes in legislation, guidance and best practice relevant to flood risk and drainage.
Applicants should be chartered with a relevant professional body such as CIWEM and bring strong organisational, communication and report‑writing skills. You will be comfortable working both independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams, with proven experience using FEH, WINFAP, Flood Modeller, HEC‑RAS and related hydrological tools. Familiarity with AutoCAD, WinDES and standard Microsoft applications is also expected.
This is an opportunity for a senior hydrologist seeking a high‑impact role within a growing consultancy, offering technical autonomy, leadership responsibility and flexible working arrangements.
