Overview
Allen Lane are pleased to be partnering with the London Borough of Newham to recruit a Senior Network Engineer on a permanent basis. This is an exciting opportunity to join a progressive, tech-driven local authority and play a central role in the design, delivery and support of secure, reliable and high-performing network infrastructure. You will play a key role in the Council’s cloud-first transition, helping modernise legacy infrastructure and ensure scalable, secure, and resilient connectivity across the borough. Please note that this is a hybrid role and candidates will be required to be office based up to 2 days per week.
Responsibilities
- Be accountable for supporting and enhancing the voice and data network services that underpin council operations.
- Design, support, and troubleshoot hybrid networks across on-premises infrastructure and cloud platforms including Microsoft Azure.
- Investigate and resolve complex network issues to ensure optimal performance and minimal downtime.
- Support the development of network architecture, including security controls, and connectivity standards in line with the council’s cloud-first strategy.
- Develop and maintain network documentation, risk registers, and technical standards.
- Manage risk, promote compliance, and contribute to operational standards and agile working practices.
- Support the development of engineers and contribute to a culture of knowledge sharing, documentation, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- Hands on experience with Azure Networking, Cisco, Meraki (including firewalls) and firewall platforms.
- Any exposure to Arista (formerly Pluribus) networks would be advantageous.
- A clear understanding of network security best practices, segmentation, and business continuity planning.
- A proactive, collaborative approach with the ability to lead technically and communicate clearly with stakeholders, senior leaders, third parties and partners.
- Experience in implementing and supporting routing/switching protocols such as OSPF, BGP and STP, firewall policies and Wi-Fi environments.
- Experience supporting and evolving hybrid networks during transformation programmes.
- Experience identifying and mitigating network risks, with a strong focus on documentation, systems optimisation, and the effective use of network monitoring tools.
