Looking for a finance role where you can make a difference?

We're seeking a talented accountant to join the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) as Deputy Financial Controller.

This is an opportunity to take on a broad and influential role within a smaller government department, where you'll gain a unique understanding of the whole organisation and work closely with colleagues at every level.

Compared to some larger departments, you'll have the opportunity to shape decisions, drive improvements and see the direct impact of your work. As the SFO continues to expand its capabilities and invest in its future, you'll play an important role in strengthening financial controls, improving processes and supporting an organisation that delivers nationally significant work tackling serious and complex fraud, bribery and corruption.

The role

Working closely with the Financial Controller, you'll help lead the financial control function and ensure the organisation maintains the highest standards of financial management.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading and developing members of the finance team
  • Managing the accounts payable function and approving payments
  • Performing and reviewing balance sheet reconciliations
  • Maintaining the fixed asset register and ensuring effective financial controls
  • Helping to produce the annual financial statements and supporting the Annual Report and Accounts process
  • Working with internal and external auditors throughout the audit cycle
  • Preparing cash flow forecasts and supporting financial planning activities
  • Leading Cabinet Office, HM Treasury and transparency reporting requirements
  • Identifying and implementing process improvements, including within Oracle Fusion
  • Building strong relationships with stakeholders across the organisation

About you

We're looking for an ambitious finance professional who combines strong technical knowledge with excellent leadership and communication skills.

You will bring:

  • Experience of financial control, balance sheet reconciliations and month-end processes
  • Experience working with Oracle, SAP or similar ERP systems
  • A track record of improving processes and delivering high-quality services
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
  • Experience leading or developing teams to achieve shared objectives

We offer

  • Flexible working opportunities
  • A collaborative and supportive team environment
  • Exposure to a wide range of stakeholders and senior colleagues
  • Meaningful work with visible organisational impact
  • Excellent development opportunities within the Civil Service

Hybrid working with 40% office attendance. The office is currently situated near Trafalgar Square in central London but will be moving to Canary Wharf in early 2027.
