Location: London

Duration: 12-Month Contract

About the Role

This is a site-based Shift Engineer role supporting the operation and maintenance of critical building systems within a BP office environment. The engineer will ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of electrical, HVAC, and critical infrastructure systems while managing contractors, maintenance activities, and compliance requirements. The role works alongside a Monday-Friday engineer and another shift engineer, reporting to the Engineering Supervisor. This position is initially for cover with potential for extension.

Key Responsibilities

  • Electrical & Building Maintenance
    • Maintain and troubleshoot LV (Low Voltage) electrical systems.
    • Perform electrical isolations and ensure safe contractor activities.
    • Diagnose faults in electrical systems, control systems, UPS systems, power quality issues, motors, VFDs, and soft starters.
    • Install and maintain electrical and mechanical equipment.
    • Ensure spare parts are available for maintenance activities.
  • HVAC & Critical Environment Systems
    • Operate and maintain HVAC systems, FCUs (Fan Coil Units), VAV systems, chilled water systems, and chilled beams.
    • Monitor environmental conditions and equipment performance.
    • Support operation of critical facilities such as data rooms.
  • Contractor & Permit Management
    • Coordinate and supervise contractors.
    • Ensure compliance with Permit-to-Work and Control-of-Work processes.
    • Prepare risk assessments, method statements, and work requests.
    • Support small projects and upgrades.
  • Compliance & Safety
    • Follow company Health & Safety procedures.
    • Maintain water hygiene and L8 compliance.
    • Support fire alarms, suppression systems, and life safety systems.
    • Investigate incidents and produce reports.
    • Ensure maintenance documentation is up to date.
  • Systems & Technology
    • Use tablets and maintenance systems for real-time work updates.
    • Work with Building Management Systems (BMS), DALI lighting systems, power monitoring equipment, and permit-to-work software.
  • Emergency Response
    • Participate in out-of-hours emergency response.
    • Support business continuity plans during outages or critical incidents.
    • Escalate urgent issues to management.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Essential
    • Recognized Electrical Apprenticeship.
    • City & Guilds, NVQ, or equivalent Electrical qualification.
    • Minimum 5 years' experience in critical facilities/building services environments.
    • Experience with electrical systems and wiring regulations, BMS controls, HVAC systems, UPS and standby power systems, fault finding and diagnostics, contractor management, and permit-to-work procedures.
