We are seeking an experienced Safety Manager to lead and manage all safety aspects within a National Armaments Director Group (formerly Defence Equipment & Support) project team. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with relevant safety legislation, MOD regulations, and industry best practices throughout the project lifecycle, acting as the primary safety advisor to the Project Manager and Senior Responsible Owner.
Key Responsibilities
- Safety requirements: Own the generation of technical safety requirements and documentation for a project, considering in-service support and associated costs. This includes the generation, updating, reviewing, endorsing, and recommending acceptance of safety artefacts.
- Safety Management System: Develop, manage and maintain an effective Safety Management System. Identify and analyse hazards and contribute to the identification and evaluation of risk reduction measures, ensuring that these are adequately documented and managed.
- Legislation, standards and policy: Working in a highly regulated area, apply relevant safety legislation, regulation, policy, processes, and standards to safety artefacts.
- Hazard identification and risk assessment: Identify and analyse safety impacts and contribute to the identification and evaluation of risk reduction measures, ensuring that these are adequately documented and managed.
- Design safety: Provide informed and accurate safety engineering advice and guidance to decision makers through design review panels.
- Stakeholder management: Oversee the management of contractual aspects to ensure safety requirements are captured and the management of contractors who perform safety activities.
- Verification & Validation: Manage the test, verification, validation, and evaluation process.
- Assurance: Develop and maintain project safety assurance plans, monitor compliance, and ensure that safety assurance evidence is gathered and assessed for safety case preparation. Lead on safety assurance activities as appropriate.
The Ideal Candidate will have
- Essential: A relevant engineering or safety degree (or equivalent experience).
- Experience of Safety Management within NADG/DE&S or MOD environment.
- Safety management experience in Aviation or Weapons, Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives (WOME).
- Experience of MOD safety regulations and Defence Standards.
- Experience in developing and maintaining Safety Cases and Safety Management Systems.
- Incorporated Engineer or equivalent demonstrable experience.
- Proficiency in safety analysis techniques (HAZID, HAZOP, FMEA, FTA, etc.).
- Excellent report writing and documentation skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Must be within commuting distance of Abbey Wood, Bristol.
- Desirable: Professional safety qualification (e.g., NEBOSH Diploma, GradIOSH) or equivalent.
- Familiarity with Defence acquisition processes and governance.
Location: Successful candidates must be within commuting distance of Abbey Wood, Bristol.
Travel: Regular travel to supplier sites, test facilities, and other MOD establishments will be required.
Salary: Competitive package including excellent benefits.
This role will require SC (Security Check) clearance as a minimum (DV may be required depending on project classification).
