Component Engineer – Obsolescence Management

Role Overview

Allan Webb Ltd provides leading Obsolescence Management (OM) Services, training and supportability engineering across highly regulated sectors, helping customers reduce whole-life costs, improve availability and sustain complex assets through data-led, proactive support.

We are seeking a Component Engineer to join our growing OM Capability. The successful candidate will provide technical component expertise across client programmes, supporting obsolescence monitoring, lifecycle assessment, alternative item identification, risk analysis and mitigation planning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver component engineering support across OM projects, programmes and client accounts, applying working knowledge of relevant engineering standards such as IEC 62402.
  • Assess component lifecycle status, availability, compliance and technical suitability across electronic, electrical, mechanical and COTS items.
  • Analyse BOMs, parts lists, technical data and supplier notices to identify obsolescence risks and programme impacts.
  • Identify, evaluate and recommend alternative components, second sources and mitigation options, including form-fit-function replacements.
  • Prepare risk reports, technical assessments and mitigation strategies, supporting client OM policies, records, continuous improvement and capability growth.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Experience in component engineering, obsolescence management, support engineering or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Strong understanding of component lifecycle management, part selection, alternative assessment and technical risk mitigation.
  • Ability to interpret datasheets, specifications, drawings, standards, supplier information, BOMs and parts lists to identify lifecycle, availability, compliance and sourcing risks.
  • Awareness of relevant obsolescence, component and legislative requirements, including IEC 62402, IEC 62239-1, SAE AS5553, REACH and RoHS.
  • Analytical, organised and self-motivated, with the ability to turn complex technical and supply chain data into clear recommendations.

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Engineering background with experience in defence, aerospace, nuclear, transportation, manufacturing or another highly regulated engineering environment.
  • Knowledge of anti-counterfeit processes, counterfeit avoidance requirements and component authentication considerations.
  • Experience with obsolescence monitoring, market intelligence, component prediction tools or technical service delivery.
  • Understanding of Integrated Product Support, Integrated Logistics Support, Supportability Engineering or S-Series specifications.
  • Relevant qualification, equivalent experience or professional membership, such as IIOM, IET, IMechE or an equivalent institution.
