The Senior Broadcast Engineer is responsible for the technical leadership, reliability and continuous improvement of GB News' broadcast and production infrastructure, ensuring the successful delivery of live and recorded content across television, radio and digital platforms. Acting as a senior technical specialist within the Engineering team, the Senior Broadcast Engineer provides expert-level support for complex broadcast systems, leads incident resolution during critical operational events, playing a key role in the design, implementation and optimisation of technical workflows and infrastructure.
A significant aspect of the role is the delivery of engineering projects and technology transformation initiatives. The Senior Broadcast Engineer will lead the planning, design, implementation, testing, commissioning and operational handover of new systems, infrastructure upgrades, workflow improvements and technology deployments. Working closely with technology leadership, operational stakeholders, vendors and project teams, the role helps shape the future technical architecture and operational capabilities of GB News.
Working within a dynamic 24/7 broadcast environment, the Senior Broadcast Engineer is expected to demonstrate strong technical expertise, leadership capability, project delivery experience, sound decision-making and a proactive approach to innovation and continuous improvement.
Key Accountabilities- Lead the maintenance, support, and continuous improvement of broadcast and production systems, ensuring uninterrupted on-air services.
- Provide expert technical support and leadership during major incidents, critical broadcasts and operational escalations.
- Diagnose and resolve complex hardware, software, networking, infrastructure and broadcast system issues.
- Act as a senior escalation point for engineering and operational teams.
- Lead preventative maintenance programmes and system health initiatives to maximise reliability and resilience.
- Support and oversee live productions, outside broadcasts and special events, ensuring all technical requirements are delivered.
- Lead engineering projects from technical design through implementation, testing, commissioning and operational handover.
- Develop technical project plans, implementation schedules, migration strategies, risk assessments and testing plans.
- Design, implement, test, and commission new broadcast systems, workflows and infrastructure upgrades.
- Act as technical lead for infrastructure upgrades, system integrations, cloud migration initiatives and technology transformation projects.
- Work closely with project managers, vendors, suppliers and technology partners to ensure successful project delivery.
- Define technical requirements, acceptance criteria and operational support models for new systems and services.
- Manage technical change activities while ensuring minimal impact to operational services.
- Conduct proof-of-concept testing and technical evaluations of emerging technologies.
- Maintain and develop technical standards, documentation, operational procedures and knowledge repositories.
- Identify opportunities for innovation, automation, workflow optimisation and operational efficiency.
- Mentor and support Junior Broadcast Engineers and Broadcast Engineers, promoting technical development and knowledge sharing.
- Contribute to technology roadmaps, capacity planning, business continuity and disaster recovery initiatives.
- Participate in senior engineering on-call and shift support arrangements.
- Own the technical performance, availability, and stability of assigned broadcast systems and services.
- Lead technical investigations, root cause analysis and service restoration activities during major incidents.
- Manage planned maintenance activities and engineering change implementations.
- Ensure engineering best practices, operational procedures and technical standards are followed.
- Support technical compliance, resilience, monitoring and security requirements across engineering systems.
- Provide senior engineering support during live broadcasts, breaking news coverage and critical operational events.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance across the Engineering team.
- Mentor and coach Junior Broadcast Engineers and Broadcast Engineers.
- Act as a senior escalation point for complex operational and technical issues.
- Support recruitment, onboarding, training and development activities.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, accountability and operational excellence.
- Coordinate engineering resources and technical activities across project workstreams.
- Act as technical lead for assigned projects and strategic engineering initiatives.
- Build strong relationships with newsroom, production, operations and technology teams.
- Act as a trusted technical advisor to stakeholders across the business.
- Collaborate with project managers and technology leadership to support strategic objectives and project delivery.
- Manage relationships with external vendors, systems integrators and technology suppliers.
- Ensure clear communication of technical risks, project progress, operational impacts and engineering priorities.
- Significant experience supporting complex broadcast, media, production or critical IT systems within a live operational environment.
- Strong technical knowledge of broadcast workflows, signal paths, production systems, media technology and associated infrastructure.
- Advanced troubleshooting and fault‑finding skills across hardware, software, networking and infrastructure platforms.
- Strong understanding of IP networking and its application within modern broadcast environments.
- Proven experience leading engineering projects, infrastructure upgrades, system migrations or technology implementations.
- Experience supporting live broadcasts and managing technical incidents under pressure.
- Experience planning, testing, implementing and supporting technical change activities.
- Ability to manage competing operational and project priorities while maintaining service quality.
- Experience producing and maintaining technical documentation, engineering standards and support procedures.
- Strong communication, stakeholder management and interpersonal skills.
- Experience mentoring or supporting the development of junior team members.
