The Opportunity

Designing mechanical services for a live food production facility or a pharmaceutical plant is a different discipline to designing them for an office block. Hygiene standards, process integration, containment, shutdown windows and validation requirements all shape the design before aesthetics get a look in. That is the work our client is recruiting a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead.

Our client is an established M&E engineering specialist based in Warrington, delivering predominantly into industrial, food and drink, FMCG and pharmaceutical environments. This is a senior role within their in-house design team, taking full ownership of mechanical design delivery from concept through to installation, providing technical direction to less experienced engineers, and working alongside the pre-construction and delivery teams rather than at arms length from them.

It is a permanent role in Warrington, £50,000 to £65,000 depending on experience, plus a full benefits package.

About the Business

Our client is a well-established M&E engineering specialist with national reach and a strong North-West base. Their capability spans mechanical services, electrical engineering, HVAC, in-house design and planned and reactive maintenance, all delivered under one roof. The Warrington operation works predominantly across industrial, food and drink, FMCG and pharmaceutical environments, delivering for a client base that includes some of the UKs most recognisable manufacturers and processors. Much of that work is carried out within live production facilities, where the engineering has to accommodate hygiene standards, process constraints, shutdown windows and strict compliance requirements. It is a technically demanding end of the market and a long way from standard commercial building services.

Accreditations include ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. The business has grown steadily on the strength of delivery and long-term client relationships, with a high proportion of repeat and referral-based work. Design sits in-house alongside delivery, which means designers see how their work performs in practice rather than handing it over and moving on.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Taking ownership of mechanical building services design from concept through to installation and commissioning
  • Designing mechanical systems for industrial, process, food and drink and pharmaceutical environments, including live production facilities
  • Producing calculations, specifications, schematics and design documentation to a high technical standard
  • Accounting for hygiene, containment, process integration and validation requirements within the design
  • Providing technical direction and mentoring to less experienced design engineers
  • Supporting the pre-construction team with design input at tender and bid stage
  • Liaising with clients, consultants and specialist suppliers on technical matters
  • Resolving design queries and supporting the delivery team through installation and commissioning
  • Contributing to design standards and best practice across the team

What We're Looking For

  • A strong mechanical building services design background, with experience taking designs from concept through to delivery
  • Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent in Mechanical Building Services or Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience designing for industrial, process, food and drink, FMCG or pharmaceutical environments is a significant advantage
  • Confident producing calculations, specifications and design documentation independently
  • Comfortable providing technical direction to others and acting as a point of reference within a design team
  • Working knowledge of relevant standards, regulations and compliance requirements
  • Chartership or working towards it is welcomed, though not essential
  • Full UK driving licence

What's on Offer

  • £50,000 - £65,000 depending on experience
  • Full company benefits package
  • Technically demanding design work in process and production environments
  • A senior position with genuine ownership and technical influence
  • An in-house design team working alongside pre-construction and delivery rather than in isolation
