We are recruiting for a Planning Technician to join a busy Planning and Building Control team in Walsall on an initial three-month contract. This is a great opportunity for someone with experience in planning administration, planning application validation, Development Management support or Local Land Charges who is looking for their next local authority opportunity.
The position requires one day per week onsite in Walsall, every Tuesday.
The Role
You will provide technical support to the Development Management service, with a particular focus on the validation and registration of planning applications. Key responsibilities will include:
- Validating and registering planning applications
- Validating all categories of applications, including more complex major applications
- Checking planning applications against legislation, policy and guidance
- Reading and interpreting architectural drawings, plans and technical reports
- Checking measurements and planning application fees
- Liaising with applicants and architects regarding incomplete or incorrect applications
- Processing statutory and public consultations
- Using planning systems and GIS mapping software
- Maintaining accurate planning records
- Providing technical planning advice to customers and professionals
- Processing discharge of condition applications
- Supporting planning appeals
- Assisting with Local Land Charges searches
- Supporting the preparation and running of Planning Committee meetings
- Undertaking site visits where required
The full specification also includes responsibility for assessing planning constraints, consultation requirements and whether other approvals or permits may be required.
About You
We are looking for someone who has:
- Knowledge or experience of Planning and/or Local Land Charges
- Awareness of relevant planning legislation
- Ability to read, interpret and measure from technical plans and drawings
- Good IT skills
- Experience working with databases and ideally GIS systems
- Strong attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise your own workload
- Confidence dealing with applicants, professionals and members of the public
Applicants should ideally hold NVQ Level 3, A Levels or equivalent, although relevant experience within Planning or Local Land Charges can be accepted instead.
Working Arrangements
The role is predominantly remote with one day per week in Walsall on Tuesdays. There may occasionally be a requirement to provide out-of-hours support at Planning Committee meetings.
