Location: Truro Combined Courts, Courts of Justice, Truro, Cornwall

Pay Rate: £12.86 per hour for the first 12 weeks, increasing to £13.25 per hour thereafter

Hours: Monday to Friday, 37 hours per week (8:30am to 4:30pm or 9:00am to 5:00pm)

Working Pattern: Fully office-based

Start Date: As soon as clearance and onboarding are completed

Clearance Required: Enhanced DBS - Provided by Brookstreet

About the Role

We are recruiting an Operational Support Officer to join the team at Truro Combined Courts. This is a varied role combining court usher duties with administrative support responsibilities, playing a vital part in ensuring the smooth running of court proceedings and providing excellent service to court users. The successful candidate will be professional, organised, and confident communicating with a wide range of people in a busy court environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Court Support Duties
    • Welcoming judiciary, jurors, solicitors, barristers, police officers, witnesses, and members of the public.
    • Calling parties into courtrooms and hearing rooms in the correct order.
    • Liaising with Court Clerks, Legal Advisers, and the Witness Service.
    • Providing information relating to court proceedings and hearing arrangements.
    • Escorting court users within the building as required.
    • Administering oaths and affirmations.
    • Keeping court users informed of changes to hearing times or courtroom locations.
    • Supporting video-link hearings both onsite and remotely.
    • Preparing hearing rooms, tribunals, trials, and meeting rooms.
    • Assisting judiciary and colleagues outside of hearing times.
    • Ensuring courtrooms and hearing rooms are cleared and prepared at the end of each day.
  • Administrative Duties
    • Preparing papers, files, and bundles for hearings, tribunals, and meetings.
    • Producing court documents and standard correspondence.
    • Updating and maintaining records on internal systems.
    • Data entry and filing.
    • Processing incoming and outgoing post.
    • General office administration duties.
    • Assisting court users with general enquiries.

Candidate Requirements

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in a busy environment.
  • Competent IT and data entry skills.
  • Previous administration, customer service, or public-facing experience is desirable.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately.
  • Flexible and proactive approach to work.

Additional Information

  • Interviews will be conducted via Microsoft Teams.
  • Ongoing training will be provided throughout the assignment.
  • Pre-booked annual leave may be accommodated where reasonable.
  • Occasional travel to Truro Magistrates' Court may be required for training.
