Job Description Deep Drainage Gang Position Deep Drainage Gang Groundworks / Civil Engineering
Job Overview The Deep Drainage Gang is responsible for carrying out the installation, construction, and maintenance of deep drainage systems on civil engineering and construction projects. The gang will work safely and efficiently to project drawings, specifications, and site requirements.
Main Duties Set out drainage runs, manholes, chambers, and associated structures in accordance with drawings and specifications.
Excavate trenches to the required depth, line, level, and gradient.
Install and connect drainage pipes, fittings, manholes, catchpits, and other drainage structures.
Operate and work around excavators, lifting equipment, pumps, and other site plant as required.
Install trench support, shoring, or temporary works where required.
Prepare trench bases and bedding materials to the specified requirements.
Check pipe levels, gradients, and alignment throughout the installation.
Carry out backfilling and compaction in accordance with the project specification.
Undertake dewatering and manage groundwater where necessary.
Work safely around deep excavations, existing services, plant, and live site operations.
Liaise with engineers, supervisors, plant operators, surveyors, and other trades.
Complete daily records, inspections, and quality-control documentation as required.
Maintain good housekeeping and ensure tools, plant, and materials are safely stored.
Report defects, ground conditions, damaged services, or other site issues to the Site Supervisor immediately.

Gang Leader / Drainage Supervisor
360 Excavator Operator
Pipe Layer / Drainage Operative
Groundworker / Labourer
The exact gang composition will depend on the size and requirements of the project.
Skills & Experience Previous experience in deep drainage and civil engineering works.
Competent with drainage installation, manholes, chambers, and pipework.
Good understanding of levels, gradients, drawings, and specifications.
Experience working in deep excavations and around temporary works.
Ability to work effectively as part of a gang.
Good awareness of health, safety, and environmental requirements.
Relevant CPCS/NPORS plant tickets where applicable.
CSCS or appropriate site qualifications for the role.
Ability to follow instructions and maintain high-quality workmanship.
Health & Safety Responsibilities All gang members must comply with the project RAMS, site rules, permit requirements, and relevant health and safety legislation. Particular attention must be given to excavation safety, temporary works, underground services, lifting operations, plant movements, confined spaces, and water management.
