An established engineering and manufacturing business is looking to appoint an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join its Product Development team. This is an opportunity to play a key role in the design and development of complex, high-precision products, taking ownership of projects from initial concept through to production.
Working as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, you'll be responsible for delivering innovative mechanical design solutions while ensuring products are robust, manufacturable and ready for successful introduction into production.
The Role
You'll be involved throughout the full product development lifecycle, taking responsibility for the design, development and validation of mechanical systems and assemblies. The role offers a varied mix of design work, supplier collaboration and cross-functional project involvement.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing mechanical and electro-mechanical components and assemblies using 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred)
- Producing detailed engineering drawings, specifications and manufacturing documentation
- Designing for manufacture, assembly, reliability and serviceability
- Supporting thermal management and mechanical performance through analysis and simulation
- Working closely with suppliers on component design, manufacturing and technical compliance
- Supporting the introduction of new products into manufacturing
- Collaborating with engineering, production and other departments to deliver successful new product launches
- Managing multiple design activities while meeting project timescales
About You
You'll have several years' experience designing complex engineered products within a high-technology manufacturing environment. You will enjoy solving technical challenges and working collaboratively to develop innovative engineering solutions.
You'll ideally have experience with:
- SolidWorks or a similar 3D CAD package
- Mechanical design of complex products and assemblies
- Design for manufacture, assembly and reliability
- Material selection and tolerance definition for machined and sheet metal components
- Thermal management and heat transfer within engineered products
- Working with external suppliers throughout the design process
- Producing detailed engineering documentation
Experience in any of the following would also be beneficial:
- Electro-mechanical design including PCB, connector and cable integration
- FEA and CFD analysis
- Small-scale project management
- Fibre optic, laser or other precision engineering products
- Product data or document management systems
