Are you looking for a role that will incorporate managing a team, inputting into tendering and hands-on complex design work? We are looking for a Senior Geotechnical Design Engineer to take a leading role in the delivery of complex, high-risk ground engineering solutions on technically demanding projects. This position sits at the interface of design, construction, and commercial decision-making, offering real influence over how projects are conceived, priced, and delivered.

You will be involved early in the project lifecycle, supporting tenders, developing construction-led designs, managing risk, and driving value, while remaining technically hands-on throughout delivery.

Technical Responsibilities
  • Lead the geotechnical and geo-structural design of both temporary and permanent works, including:
    • Deep excavations and basement retention systems
    • Underpinning, piled foundations, bearing piles, and ground improvement
    • Temporary works, excavation sequencing, and construction methodology development
  • Interpret and challenge ground investigation data; define design parameters and assumptions
  • Produce, review, and approve detailed calculations, reports, and specifications
  • Ensure compliance with Eurocodes, British Standards, CDM, and internal design assurance processes
  • Provide responsive technical support to site teams, adapting designs to live construction conditions
  • Manage third-party designers and check external submissions where required
Commercial & Project Responsibilities
  • Provide commercially aware engineering input at tender stage, including:
    • Design optioneering and risk-based solution selection
    • Temporary works strategies aligned with programme and cost
    • Value engineering and margin-driven design decisions
  • Support pricing through construction-led design solutions and realistic buildability assumptions
  • Identify, manage, and mitigate geotechnical risk to protect programme and commercial outcomes
  • Contribute to change control, technical queries, and claim support where design input is required
  • Balance engineering judgement with cost, programme, and contractual constraints
About You
  • Degree qualified in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering
  • Chartered or approaching Chartership (ICE or equivalent)
  • Strong background in contractor-side or design-and-build environments
  • Demonstrable experience delivering geotechnical designs in constrained urban sites
  • Commercially astute, with a clear understanding of construction cost, risk, and sequencing
  • Comfortable engaging with clients, site teams, and senior stakeholders
  • Proactive, decisive, and confident, taking ownership of technical and commercial outcomes
Why This Role?
  • Engineer solutions that are actually built - not just designed
  • Influence project strategy from tender through to delivery
  • Work on technically complex schemes where engineering decisions directly affect profit and risk
  • Clear progression toward Principal / Design Manager roles
  • Competitive salary, performance-related bonus, pension, and flexible working

DO not hesitate to apply if you think you're right for the role... it is certainly worth a chat!
