I am currently partnered with a leading London Market Insurer who are seeking a Property Underwriter to join their growing team. You will be Underwriting new and existing Property risks across the UK from a London Market view, on a direct and facultative basis. The successful candidate will have 6+ years market experience, and either be an experienced AU, or current Underwriter looking for a new challenge. Experience across UK Property, Real Estate and Property Owners is required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver the underwriting strategy for the Property portfolio, supporting profitable growth in line with business objectives and underwriting appetite.
  • Underwrite new and renewal business within delegated authority, applying sound technical judgement and strong commercial acumen.
  • Assess complex risks by reviewing applications, financial information and supporting documentation to determine acceptability in line with underwriting guidelines and standards.
  • Recommend appropriate pricing, terms, conditions and coverage enhancements based on detailed technical analysis and prevailing market conditions.
  • Build, develop and maintain strong trading relationships with key brokers, acting as a trusted underwriting partner and identifying opportunities for profitable growth.
  • Proactively develop new business opportunities while strengthening and expanding existing broker relationships across the market.
  • Work collaboratively with the Senior Underwriting Leadership Team to deliver underwriting strategy and achieve portfolio objectives.
  • Prepare quotations and respond to technical underwriting enquiries from brokers, internal stakeholders and business partners, escalating matters where appropriate.
  • Clearly communicate underwriting decisions, including referrals, underwriting requirements, rate negotiations and declinatures, ensuring brokers understand the commercial rationale behind decisions.
  • Monitor portfolio performance through analysis of quality, rate adequacy, exposure and profitability, providing insight and recommendations to support portfolio optimisation.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of underwriting appetite, products and trading strategy through technical expertise, market knowledge and underwriting insight.
  • Represent the organisation within the broker community through regular broker meetings, market visits and industry networking events, promoting the company's proposition and values.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of market trends, competitor activity, regulatory developments and emerging risks.
  • Ensure all underwriting activity complies with regulatory, legal and governance requirements, as well as relevant policies and underwriting controls.
  • Work closely with senior colleagues on risks exceeding delegated authority or requiring specialist technical input.
  • Develop proficiency across all relevant underwriting systems and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives where appropriate.
  • Undertake additional responsibilities and projects as required.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Ideally a minimum of 6+ years' commercial underwriting experience within the UK and/or London Market.
  • Broad industry experience across Large Commercial Property, Real Estate Property Owners and P&C Mid-Market business would be advantageous.
  • Strong technical underwriting expertise, with the ability to assess, structure and negotiate complex commercial risks.
  • Proven experience managing and developing a profitable portfolio of business.
  • Established broker relationships, with a demonstrable ability to build, influence and grow strong trading partnerships.
  • Strong commercial awareness and an in-depth understanding of the UK insurance market.
  • Experience contributing to and delivering underwriting strategy and portfolio development.
  • Excellent negotiation, influencing and relationship management skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
  • Sound financial and commercial acumen, with a disciplined approach to underwriting profitability.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a collaborative underwriting environment.
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and relevant underwriting systems.
  • ACII qualified, or actively working towards qualification, with a commitment to continuous professional development and ongoing technical learning.
