The Opportunity
This is a senior leadership role with responsibility for the strategic and operational performance of the commercial department. Working closely with the Managing Director and wider senior leadership team, you will lead a team of commercial professionals, drive profitability, manage commercial risk and support the successful delivery of major rail and civil engineering projects. You will also play a key role in business planning, procurement strategy, cost control, development appraisals and supporting future growth opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, develop and provide strategic direction to the commercial team
- Oversee commercial activities across a diverse project portfolio
- Drive effective cost planning, budgeting, forecasting and reporting
- Maximise profitability through procurement, value engineering and cost management
- Manage commercial risk and ensure contractual compliance
- Review subcontractor procurement strategies and major contract awards
- Work closely with planning, technical and construction teams to optimise project performance
- Provide commercial performance updates to the Board and senior leadership team
- Support business growth initiatives and identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors and key stakeholders
About You
The successful candidate will have:
- Proven experience at Commercial Director, Commercial Manager or Senior Commercial Manager level within a rail or civil engineering contractor
- Strong commercial and construction cost knowledge
- Experience leading and developing commercial teams
- A proven track record of delivering commercially successful, multi-disciplinary projects
- Strong knowledge of procurement, contract administration, cost planning and risk management
- Experience working with NEC and JCT contracts
- Excellent leadership, communication, negotiation and stakeholder management skills
- A proactive and hands-on approach suited to a growing SME environment
- Relevant commercial, construction or surveying qualifications
