We are recruiting on behalf of a leading client within the Rail Rolling Stock industry for a skilled Rail Technician to join their team in Chester. This is an exciting opportunity to work on a brand-new, state-of-the-art fleet of trains, supporting the reliability, safety and performance of modern passenger rolling stock.

The successful candidate will play a key role in fault diagnosis, maintenance and repair activities, working within a depot environment alongside a team of highly skilled engineers and technicians.

Role Overview

As a Rail Technician, you will be responsible for carrying out fault finding, root cause analysis and corrective maintenance on electrical, electronic, hydraulic and pneumatic systems across a modern train fleet.

Using electrical schematics, diagnostic software and specialist testing equipment, you will identify and rectify faults while ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with engineering standards and warranty requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnose and rectify faults on electrical, electronic, hydraulic and pneumatic train systems.
  • Conduct root cause analysis investigations and implement effective corrective actions.
  • Interpret and utilise electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic schematic diagrams to support fault diagnosis and repair activities.
  • Use diagnostic software, laptop-based systems and specialist test equipment to identify equipment failures.
  • Perform maintenance, repair and component replacement activities in line with technical procedures and safety requirements.
  • Record all maintenance activities using electronic management and reporting systems.
  • Ensure compliance with all depot safety procedures, engineering standards and company policies.
  • Support fleet reliability improvement initiatives through accurate fault reporting and technical feedback.
  • Work collaboratively with engineering, technical and operational teams to maximise fleet availability.
Systems and Equipment Covered

The successful candidate will be expected to diagnose, repair and replace components across a wide range of train systems, including:

  • Traction Control Systems
  • Brake Systems
  • Passenger Information Systems (PIS)
  • Public Address (PA) Systems
  • CCTV Systems
  • Passenger Access Doors
  • HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning)
  • Auxiliary Electrical Equipment
  • Diesel Engines and Generator Sets
  • High-Pressure Hydraulic Systems (up to 300 bar)
  • High-Pressure Pneumatic Systems (up to 12 bar)
  • Complex Cab Control Systems
  • GPS Positioning Systems
  • On-Track Safety Systems
Additional responsibilities include:
  • Wiring and integration of circuit breakers, relays, transformers, insulators, motors, cabinets and associated electrical equipment.
  • Use of electrical testing instruments and computer-based diagnostic systems.
Essential Qualifications

Level 3 qualification (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.

Desirable Qualifications

HNC (or equivalent) in an Engineering-related discipline.

Essential Experience
  • Minimum of 3 years post-apprenticeship engineering experience.
  • Proven fault finding and root cause analysis experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic schematic diagrams.
  • Experience using diagnostic software and computer-based fault-finding tools.
  • Experience using electrical test and measuring equipment.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Flexibility to work shifts including days, nights and weekends.
Desirable Experience
  • Previous experience within the rail, rolling stock, automotive, aerospace, defence, heavy engineering or other safety-critical industries.
  • Experience working on modern electrical and electronic control systems.
