Health Care Assistant (HCA) – GP Practice

Salary: From £12.92 per hour, with a higher band available for candidates bringing additional clinical competencies.

Hours: 22.5 to 37.5 hours per week.

Reports to: Nurse Manager (clinically), Surgery Manager (administratively).

About the role

We're looking for a Health Care Assistant to join our clinical team, working closely alongside our nurses to deliver high quality patient care. You'll take on a range of delegated clinical duties within our practice guidelines and protocols, with the opportunity to build your competencies and progress into a higher pay band as you take on more. Phlebotomy experience is essential for this role. Beyond that, we're happy to support the right candidate in building up further clinical skills over time.

What you'll be doing:

  • Delivering a high standard of patient care in line with individual care plans.
  • Supporting patients with long-term conditions, and carrying out reviews where competent to do so (for example, diabetes reviews), following our guidelines and protocols.
  • Giving lifestyle and health promotion advice to patients and carers.
  • Carrying out procedures, to include phlebotomy, blood pressure measurement, dressings, seasonal flu and other vaccinations, ECG recording, ear syringing and diabetic foot checks.
  • Chaperoning duties.
  • Preparing, restocking and maintaining clinical rooms and equipment, including assisting GPs during minor procedures.
  • Contributing to accurate, contemporaneous patient records.

What we're looking for:

Essential:
  • Care Certificate or NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care (or equivalent), with evidence of ongoing professional development.
  • Practical nursing skills, including phlebotomy, basic observations (temperature, pulse, respiration rate, blood pressure) and Inter-Muscular injections.
  • Experience working with people with long-term conditions or older people.
  • An appreciation of how GPs and general practice work.
  • Ability to assess and manage patient risk safely and effectively.
  • Ability to record care accurately and contemporaneously.
  • Good communication skills across different levels.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook to an intermediate level.
Desirable:
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent (or working towards).
  • Ear syringing, stop smoking support, stitch and clip removal, basic dry dressing and wound care, spirometry.
  • Ability to analyse information and draw out what it means for an individual patient's care.
