Help us kick-start a major programme of transformation. The General Dental Council (GDC) sits at the heart of the UK's dental system, protecting patients and maintaining confidence in the professionals who deliver dental care to millions of people every year. With a new strategy, Trusted and Effective 2026-2028, and a renewed ambition to become a more agile, digitally enabled and insight-driven organisation, we are embarking on one of the most significant periods of change in our recent history.

We are now looking for an experienced Interim Consultant - Digital Transformation & Change to join us for an initial 4-6 month period and help us get this important work underway. This is an opportunity for an experienced transformation leader to make an immediate impact, working with senior leaders and multidisciplinary teams to understand how our services operate today, identify opportunities for improvement and create the foundations for sustainable transformation.

About the role:

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and working closely with senior leaders and stakeholders across the GDC, you will provide focused support and delivery expertise during an important period of transformation. Your immediate priority will be to support the transformation of our Fitness to Practise (FtP) operations.

You will bring a structured, evidence-based approach to understanding how work is currently delivered, identifying duplication, complexity, inefficiencies, risks and opportunities to improve the experience and outcomes for patients, dental professionals and our colleagues.

You will:

  • Work closely with senior stakeholders and operational teams to understand the current operating model, processes, systems, customer journeys and pain points.
  • Bring together complex information from multiple disciplines and translate it into clear, practical insights and opportunities for improvement.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify processes, improve efficiency and effectiveness, and create better experiences for those who interact with the GDC.
  • Establish a clear baseline and evidence base from which future transformation activity can be prioritised.
  • Develop recommendations and an initial roadmap for future transformation and improvement activity.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across change, programme management, business analysis, service design, digital and operational teams.
  • Provide constructive challenge and bring pace, structure and momentum to the work.
  • Ensure senior leaders have a clear understanding of the issues, opportunities and decisions required to progress the transformation agenda.
  • Leave behind clear outputs, knowledge and a practical foundation that can be taken forward by the permanent Associate Director and wider transformation function.

What you will bring:

We are looking for an accomplished transformation professional who can hit the ground running, operate confidently at senior level and combine strategic thinking with practical delivery. You will be able to demonstrate:

  • Transformation leadership: Significant experience leading business transformation, service improvement or organisational change within a complex organisation.
  • Process and service improvement: Strong experience mapping and analysing complex end-to-end processes, identifying opportunities to simplify, improve efficiency and redesign services around user needs.
  • Operating model and customer journey: Experience understanding and improving operating models, customer journeys and service delivery across complex, multidisciplinary environments.
  • Structured problem solving: The ability to take complex, interconnected issues and distil them into clear problems, insights and practical solutions.
  • Stakeholder leadership: Experience working confidently with senior leaders and operational teams, bringing people together around a shared understanding of the current state and the case for change.
  • Delivery focus: A track record of establishing momentum quickly, producing tangible outputs and moving transformation activity from discovery into action.
  • Digital transformation: A strong understanding of how digital technology, data, automation and emerging technologies can support service improvement and organisational transformation.
  • Change expertise: An understanding of the people, behavioural and organisational dimensions of transformation and the ability to engage colleagues effectively through change.
  • Communication and influence: The ability to communicate complex issues clearly and concisely to different audiences, including senior stakeholders and executive leadership.

Experience of working within a regulatory, public service or similarly complex environment would be advantageous, as would experience of transforming complex casework or professional regulatory processes.

Why join us?

This is a chance to join the GDC at a pivotal point in our transformation journey and make a visible contribution from day one. You will have the opportunity to shape the initial understanding of one of our most significant operational areas, identify where meaningful improvements can be made and establish the foundations for a longer-term programme of transformation. Your work will help us move from understanding the complexity of how we work today to creating simpler, more effective ways of delivering our services.

If you are an experienced transformation leader who enjoys getting to the heart of complex problems, bringing clarity and structure, and turning insight into practical action, we would love to hear from you.

About the GDC: The General Dental Council is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and welcomes applications from all sections of the community. We are dedicated to creating an inclusive workplace where everyone can thrive.
