This is a key position within the Liquid Chromatography (LC) department, taking ownership of analytical output for a key business stream. Supporting the Section Head, the successful candidate will oversee the complete analytical journey from sample extraction to data analysis and reporting.
Key Responsibilities
- Analytical Operations: Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot HPLC, IC, LC-MS, and LC-MS/MS systems (including single and triple quadrupole instrumentation).
- Quality & Compliance: Work strictly within ISO 17025 framework requirements, ensuring accurate, reliable, and defensible analytical data.
- Method Development: Develop, optimise, and validate analytical methods for pesticides, novel compounds, and emerging environmental contaminants.
- Team Supervision: Direct and support Analysts and Extraction Chemists, prioritising day-to-day workloads to meet strict turnaround, quality, and productivity targets.
- Troubleshooting: Resolve complex technical, instrumental, and sample matrix issues across various chromatography workflows.
- Commercial Delivery: Maintain awareness of project priorities, client turnaround times, and laboratory KPIs, assisting with prospective technical queries where required.
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Degree in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline (or equivalent laboratory experience).
- Strong, hands-on experience operating and maintaining LC-MS and LC-MS/MS instrumentation within an ISO 17025 accredited environment.
- Deep technical understanding of sample extraction techniques, chromatographic separation, and mass spectrometry data evaluation.
- Proven track record of training, mentoring, or supervising junior analysts and lab staff.
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage competing project deadlines.
Desirable Experience:
- Experience developing or validating methods for pesticides or emerging contaminants.
- Prior experience managing small project workloads or supporting commercial/client-facing technical desks.
- Exposure to automated sample preparation systems or modern laboratory informatics (LIMS).
