About the Role

All Square Recruitment is pleased to be working with a well-established Colchester manufacturer to recruit a permanent Manufacturing Engineer on a salary of up to £43,000 per annum. Our client designs, tests and manufactures highly customised engineered products for industrial customers in the UK and abroad, and is known for its quality and technical expertise. Reporting to the Manufacturing Engineering Leader, you will join a team of Manufacturing and Production Engineers. You will cover a wide range of work across the factory, including process improvement, time studies, New Product Introduction (NPI) and Lean projects. This is a strong opportunity for an engineer who wants variety, ownership of their projects and long-term career development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create, track and improve works order routings, and write and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Lead Continuous Improvement (CI) and productivity projects that support the site’s Lean and Quality work, using tools such as SMED, Poka-Yoke and TPM.
  • Take part in the NPI process and shape it so that new products are designed for manufacture and assembly (DFMA).
  • Find the root cause of production problems, put corrective actions in place, and respond quickly to support day-to-day output.
  • Identify, justify and deliver Capital Expenditure requests, including the benefits case and return-on-investment timescales.
  • Plan, draw and carry out factory layout changes with Maintenance, EHS and sub-contractors. Source and replace tooling and fixtures as needed.
  • Support the Maintenance function and help develop the Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) system.
  • Keep EHS compliant, including hazard identification, risk assessments and COSHH. Additionally, maintain department KPIs and near-miss reporting.
  • Coach and develop shop-floor colleagues, and work with Engineering and Project Management to protect the order book from future risks.

Candidate Requirements & Qualifications

  • HND in Mechanical Engineering as a minimum. A degree with a mechanical or electronic focus is preferred, although relevant experience will also be considered.
  • Proven experience as a Manufacturing Engineer, Production Engineer or Process Engineer in a modern manufacturing or assembly plant.
  • Practical experience of Lean manufacturing, with real examples of implementing SMED, Poka-Yoke, TPM or similar tools.
  • A track record of automated and/or ergonomic process improvements.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical control systems.
  • A strong understanding of health and safety in a manufacturing environment.
