Aligra is excited to offer a remarkable opportunity for a Senior Civil Design Engineer to join our dynamic Civil Engineering team. Nestled in our bustling Leicestershire or Birmingham office, we collaborate predominantly with housing developers across the Midlands. With substantial front orders, we are in search of a skilled Engineer to bolster our expanding team and growing workload. Key Responsibilities

  • Operational Leadership: Assist the Director with the operation of the regional team, ensuring the team meets productivity and growth aspirations. Manage a diverse portfolio of residential, commercial, and public sector projects.
  • Collaborative Work: Foster liaison and cooperative working relationships with team members, senior staff, and colleagues across various disciplines. This role offers progression potential to Associate level, contingent upon meeting targets, goals, and KPIs.
  • Project Deliverables: Produce comprehensive reports, design models, drawings, calculations, and correspondence. Utilize specialist design software, CAD, and Microsoft Office.
  • Infrastructure Design: Spearhead the design of new infrastructure schemes, including roads, drainage, and external works to serve new developments. Engage in the design of roundabouts, signal junctions, and other S278 highway schemes.
  • Sustainable Solutions: Develop sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) in alignment with current design guidance and legislation.
  • Project Management: Oversee projects to company standards, including administration, client liaison, quality assurance, fee proposals, budgeting, resource management, team briefing, and invoicing.
  • Public Engagement: Conduct public consultation events and participate in meetings with clients, team members, other disciplines, and relevant third-parties.
  • Third-Party Approvals: Prepare and submit designs for third-party approvals, maintaining proactive communication with clients, authorities, and agencies to ensure project completion within deadlines and budgets.
  • Customer Service Excellence: Deliver exceptional service levels to clients to secure repeat business and future opportunities for the company.
  • Cross-Office Collaboration: Work across all offices as required, and be willing to work additional hours to fulfil responsibilities and attend meetings/events.

Key Skills and Attributes

  • Infrastructure Design Expertise: Engage in infrastructure design, inclusive of design models, drawings, calculations, contract documents, bills of quantities, reports, and correspondence. Maintain and improve department standards, systems, and procedures.
  • Technological Innovation: Participate in research and development of technological innovations to aid continuous growth and diversification.
  • Mentorship and Development: Provide supervision, guidance, and advice to new team members, and ensure a regime of continued professional development and training for team growth.
  • Business Strategy: Assist the Associate in preparing business plans per company financial projection targets. Engage in business development and networking to expand existing client relationships and discover new opportunities.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Comply with Designer’s responsibilities under the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2015. Maintain a valid CSCS Card and a working understanding of site/construction safety.
  • Communication and Feedback: Maintain regular communication internally and externally, gather performance feedback from clients, and agree on fee proposals and timescales.
  • Quality Assurance: Prepare and review calculations, technical documents, reports, and correspondence to ensure quality and accuracy in project delivery. Ensure these rigorous checking procedures are followed by all team members.
  • Site Visits: Conduct site visits for inspections or investigation work, and attend meetings with team members, clients, and suppliers. Occasionally attend events and meetings outside of regular office hours.
  • Professional Development: Follow a continued professional development and training programme, achieving a minimum of 12 days of CPD annually.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Educational Background: Hold a Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or a related discipline. Be a member of ICE or another relevant professional body. Progress towards or hold Incorporated/Chartered Engineer status.
  • Design Software Proficiency: Demonstrate proficiency in various design software, including PDS, XPSite3D, Civils 3D, Micro drainage, and AutoCAD.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Have working knowledge of highway and drainage design standards and submission and approval processes with Building Control, NHBC, and Highway Authorities.
  • Communication Skills: Exhibit strong IT skills, particularly in Microsoft Office, and excellent written skills, especially in report writing and client liaison.
  • Teamwork and Independence: Be able to work independently and as part of a team, collaborating with various disciplines and offices within MEC and external organisations.
  • Motivation and Leadership: Show self-motivation with ambitions to contribute to company growth. Capable of mentoring and supervising trainee staff to develop their skills.
  • Driving Licence: Hold a full clean driving licence with a private car insured for business use.
