The Caretaker is responsible for performing a wide range of light- and heavy-duty custodial and facilities support services to ensure a clean, safe, secure, and well-maintained environment. This role contributes to the overall operations of the facility by supporting daily cleaning activities, event setups, and building maintenance tasks, while adhering to safety and security standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform routine custodial duties, including cleaning and sanitizing assigned areas such as offices, classrooms, common spaces, and washrooms;
  • Complete intermediate and advanced cleaning tasks, including project-based cleaning and floor care (e.g., stripping, waxing, buffing, and carpet maintenance);
  • Set up and dismantle furnishings and equipment for meetings, events, and campus activities;
  • Deliver supplies, equipment, and materials across the facility as required;
  • Support basic building safety and security by conducting routine checks and reporting any hazards, damages, or concerns;
  • Operate cleaning equipment and tools in a safe and efficient manner;
  • Respond to service requests and maintain cleanliness standards in accordance with institutional guidelines;
  • Work collaboratively with the Building Services team and follow direction from the Building Services Coordinator and/or Manager of Facilities;
  • Adhere to all health, safety, and operational policies and procedures;
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum two (2) years of custodial/caretaking experience in an institutional or commercial environment;
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting, bending, and extended periods of standing or walking;
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, equipment, and floor care techniques;
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • This position requires the successful candidate to hold a valid driver’s license (e.g., Class G). Proof of a valid driver’s license will be required upon hire;
  • A satisfactory criminal background check is required.
Work Environment:
  • This position requires regular onsite work at Algonquin College’s Pembroke Campus. Work may include early mornings, evenings, or weekends depending on operational needs.
