About algo1
At algo1, we are reinventing one of the world’s most familiar experiences: the in-store grocery trip. We are building an AI-native product that understands each shopper, responds to their context in real time and makes an everyday experience less stressful, more personal and more engaging. We’re backed by leading investors and founded by two entrepreneurs: one with a track record of building and scaling companies, and the other a leader in retail data and shopper analytics. Together, they have brought together frontier AI researchers and engineers, product and strategy leaders, and senior operators from major UK and US grocery businesses. The people who join now will have an opportunity to shape the product, the engineering culture, and what algo1 becomes.
The Role
We’re looking for a Full Stack Engineer with Frontend specialism to work closely with product, design, mobile, and machine learning team members to design & build experiences that re-define how brands and retailers serve their shoppers. You'll help build engaging & intuitive web experiences using highly responsive UI components and real-time data flows. You will work closely with our Head of B2B Product, James, turning ambitious and sometimes ambiguous product ideas into software that retailers and consumer brands rely on to create, launch, and measure campaigns. We are looking for people of varying experience levels who are willing to take the lead on delivering features end-to-end. You will have already embraced agentic coding and how it can be used to enhance individual and team productivity.
What You Will Own
Design and implement reactive, real-time web interfaces that help brands and retailers manage and analyse the in-store experience delivered by our product. Translate user and business needs into a functional web application that delivers complex, intelligent capabilities through an elegantly simple interface designed for non-technical audiences. Contribute to API and broader system design & documentation as part of end-to-end delivery of features.
Essential Qualifications
- Strong understanding of UX principles and web design fundamentals
- Expert in Typescript and React
- Experience with real-time and bi-directional communication protocols and patterns (eg. WebSockets, SSE)
- Built and deployed services on any major cloud providers' services (Azure, GCP, AWS)
- AI-Native development: Fast iteration & prototyping using AI tools such as Copilot, Claude or Cursor
Nice to Have
- Experience in backend development and event-driven architecture
- Our stack includes python, FastAPI, postgres, Kafka and MQTT
- Worked with IoT or Edge-oriented architectures
- Experience or knowledge in retail POS, inventory, or loyalty systems

How to prepare for a job interview at algo1
✨Brush Up on Your Coding Skills
For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.
✨Know Your Tools and Frameworks
Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If algo1 uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

✨Prepare for Behavioural Questions
While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
