The Cellular Pathology department within the Royal Victoria Infirmary is recruiting a Registered Biomedical Scientist to support our expanding service needs. The role requires HCPC registered candidates with knowledge of Cellular Pathology and experience in an NHS laboratory.

  • Hours: 37 hours 30 minutes per week
  • Location: Royal Victoria Infirmary, NE1 4LP
  • Salary: £31,049 to £37,796 per annum (Agenda for Change, Band 5)
  • Contract: Permanent full-time

Responsibilities

  • Receipt of specimens, recording details on laboratory information system, and assisting in specimen dissection and preparation of samples for processing.
  • Orientation and embedding tissue samples, microtomy, tissue staining, immunohistochemistry, validating results and quality control of stained slides.
  • Cryotomy on intra‑operative samples.
  • Operation and programming of laboratory equipment (x‑rays, tissue processors, staining machines).
  • Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, report faults and non‑compliances, and take prompt action in unexpected situations.
  • Ensure laboratory diagnostic tests are performed accurately and efficiently; validate results microscopically and determine if further tests are required.
  • Microscopically interpret tissue and/or fluid samples, selecting and dissecting areas for diagnosis (e.g., renal biopsies).
  • Work in compliance with local health and safety rules, adhering to departmental and Trust health and safety policies (COSHH, risk assessments, SOPs) and reporting non‑compliances.

Qualifications & Education

  • BSc in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent approved by the IBMS.
  • Health and Care Professions Council registration (HCPC).

Essential Skills & Knowledge

  • Keyboard skills.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise own work activities.
  • Strong communication, analytical and judgemental skills.
  • Planning and organisational skills.
  • Knowledge of Cellular Pathology.
  • Previous laboratory experience as a Trainee Biomedical Scientist/Healthcare Scientist in an NHS laboratory.
  • Familiarity with Health & Safety and COSHH.
  • Participation in CPD.

Desirable

  • Member of the IBMS.
  • Computer literacy.
