One of the national Pulmonary Hypertension centres we are involved with referrals, diagnosis and treatment. Pulmonary Hypertension is a rare and complex disease which requires expert knowledge and an MDT approach. As a Pulmonary Hypertension nurse specialist your role will require you to provide high quality care to those with a serious life long, progressive and rare disease.
Main duties of the job:
- Nurse led Clinics including history taking and prescribing decisions
- Assistance in Consultant clinics
- Independent clinical decision making
- Co-ordination of inpatient and out patient care
- Patient and health care professional education
- Advocate for the patient
Job responsibilities:
The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust defines a nurse specialist as a qualified nurse where the primary purpose of role is to provide guidance and support based on advanced level knowledge to patients, carers and health professionals concerning a specific disease/condition.
Band 6 β Within The Sphere Of Specialist Practice:
- Is working towards advanced knowledge and skills within specialist sphere of practice.
- Contributes to the facilitation of the planning, delivery and evaluation of care pathways for a designated group of patients.
- Support the development of nursing practice within the specialist field and contribute to the body of nursing knowledge.
- Contributes to training and education within specialist area.
If appointable as a Band 6 you will undertake the non medical prescribers and a clinical skills courses. Once these have been achieved and competencies complete within approximately 18 months you will progress to a band 7.
Band 7 β Within The Sphere Of Specialist Practice:
- Demonstrates significant advanced knowledge and skills within speciality and sphere of practice.
- Take a lead role facilitating the planning, delivery and evaluation of care pathways for a designated group of patients.
- Support the development of nursing practice within the specialist field and contribute to the body of nursing knowledge.
- Have corporate identity as an expert within specialist area.
- Lead and provide training and education across the organisation in relevant area of practice.
Person Specification:
Meets All Band 6 Criteria:
- Registered nurse (appropriate to branch)
- Current NMC registration
- Diploma plus specialist qualifications / experience within specialist area; prepared to take degree level study
- Meets Nursing and Midwifery Council standards for student supervision and assessment (formally Mentorship) if relevant to role
- Current driving licence if relevant to role
- Some post registration experience within related specialist area of practice
- Extended clinical practice underpinned by training supervision & assessment
- Knowledge and understanding of relevant NHS policy or project specific policy context
- Has understanding / experience of adult / child safeguarding
- Evidence of on-going continuous professional development
- Good IT skills
- Effective report writing skills
- Able to work independently and as a member of a team
- Effective organisation and time management skills
- Moving and handling patients and objects in line with Trust guidelines using appropriate aids
Desirable:
- Degree in health related subject
- Research or audit experience
- Evidence of contribution towards education and training programmes
- Change management skills and involvement in project work

- Degree level / Masterβs level study, or a combination of equivalent specialist study / experience
- Meets NMC requirements for mentorship if relevant to role
- Extensive post registration experience, some of which will be at a senior level within the required specialist area of practice

- Audit / research experience
- Evidence of on-going continuous professional development
- Knowledge and understanding of relevant NHS policy or project specific policy context
- Has understanding / experience of adult / child safeguarding
- Good IT skills
- Effective report writing skills
- Able to work independently and across disciplines as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
- Effective organisation and time management skills
