Job Summary

This is an exciting, degree apprenticeship opportunity based in Newcastle at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care, Freeman Hospital. This 3‑year apprenticeship programme prepares you for a career as a qualified Therapeutic Radiographer in the NHS by providing the underpinning theoretical knowledge and practical skills the profession demands. You will work as part of a close knit team under the supervision of registered therapeutic radiographers to deliver safe and effective radiotherapy treatments to adult cancer patients. Therapeutic radiographers are an integral part of the multidisciplinary team and work closely with oncologists, physicists, technicians, nursing and administrative colleagues to ensure that patients receive the highest quality of care.

The course will deliver against the nationally recognised Level 6 Therapeutic Radiographer Degree Apprenticeship standard. The apprenticeship includes a combination of work‑based learning modules and specialist education, which leads to a BSc (Hons) Therapeutic Radiography. Graduates are eligible to apply to register with the Health Care Professional Council.

Main Duties of the Job

Therapeutic Radiographers provide the highest standard of technical practice and patient care in order to treat and support patients receiving radiotherapy treatment. As an apprentice you will gain the skills and knowledge required to be able to deliver safe and effective radiotherapy treatment. You will rotate through both the pre‑treatment and treatment sections of the department and become competent in the operation of both a CT scanner and Linear Accelerator. All patients are treated using image‑guided radiotherapy (IGRT); you will need to develop excellent technical, anatomical and analysis skills to ensure treatments are delivered as planned and prescribed. The role involves caring for patients diagnosed with cancer, managing their emotional, psychological and physical needs, staying calm under pressure and working well as part of a team.

Job Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a team to ensure safe and accurate delivery of radiotherapy under the supervision of a state‑registered radiographer.
  • Attend mandatory teaching sessions at Sheffield Hallam University and take annual leave outside university sessions.
  • Based in Newcastle radiotherapy department with potential visits to other departments.
  • Commit to study in work and at home, including online sessions and e‑learning.
  • Adhere to Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017, IR(ME)R 2017, HCP Council and Society of Radiographers codes of practice, and Health and Safety at Work Act.
  • Practice within the framework set out by the Society of Radiographers Code of Professional Conduct and HCP Council Standards of Proficiency.
  • Implement departmental procedures and report any variances under ISO 9001.
  • Apply knowledge of radiation hazards and adhere to safety regulations.
  • Ensure safe use of complex equipment; no budgetary responsibility.
  • Support colleagues flexibly during workload pressure.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Right to work and remain in the UK.
  • Have lived in the UK for at least 3 years.
  • Provide original evidence of required English and maths qualifications.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Qualifications: A Level BBC (112 UCAS points) in a science subject or BTEC DMM (extended diploma) in a science/healthcare subject or equivalent.
  • English and Maths at Level 2 (GCSE grades 9‑4 or A*‑C, CSE Grade 1, or Functional/Key Skills Level 2).
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of radiotherapy.
  • Awareness of national standards and legislation such as IRR 2017, IR(ME)R 2017 and associated codes of practice.
  • IT literate.
  • Excellent communication skills (listening, written, verbal, non‑verbal).
  • Excellent time‑management.

Desirable

  • Successful formal accredited study at level 3 and minimum 6 months experience in a health and social care capacity.
  • Health and social care work experience.
