Job Summary

This is an exciting and challenging role to be based at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care – North Cumbria (NCCC‑NC) and at the Henderson Suite within Whitehaven Hospital. The centre in Carlisle is purpose built for the provision of cancer treatment, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy. At the Henderson Suite we provide chemotherapy. One of the benefits we are able to provide our patients with is access to complementary therapies – funded by Newcastle Hospitals Charity, currently with funding for 3 years.

Main duties of the job

The right candidate will be sensitive and caring with good listening and communication skills, able to use assessment skills and techniques to provide complementary therapy intervention appropriate to the patient’s condition, cancer and its treatment. They will be able to provide and receive complex and sensitive patient information to and from the wider multidisciplinary team.

They will manage their own caseload with support from the wider team, and be able to work without supervision. They will liaise with the nursing/medical teams to establish which patients are appropriate for input of complementary therapies. They will be required to access and input into NHS Patient systems to ensure continuity of care is provided and that comprehensive patient treatment records are kept.

Future growth of the service may require the candidate to take on the role of team lead. The role can be physically demanding requiring standing, sitting and walking with a trolley containing therapy items, and potential moving and handling of patients as part of their therapy treatment.

Job Description

The role will require you to work independently to provide a full complementary therapy service for the patients in NCCC‑NC, including the following therapies:

  • Aromatherapy
  • Reflexology
  • Massage (including light touch massage)
  • Acupuncture

There is a requirement that therapies are provided at NCCC‑NC and at the Henderson Suite in Whitehaven, so the ability to travel to both sites is required.

Deliver complementary therapies in accordance with NHS policies, infection control standards and patient safety guidelines. Work closely with the nursing and medical teams to identify patients who would benefit from the services provided. Maintain calm, caring and professional demeanor under potentially emotional circumstances. Communicate effectively and sensitively, understand the complex needs of patients undergoing cancer treatment. Manage caseload, update patient records accurately, document consent, treatments provided and communicate information to the wider medical teams. Promote patient education and wellbeing through holistic approaches.

Person Specification

Essential – Qualifications & Education

  • Recognised degree qualification in one or more complementary therapy or diploma plus experience to degree level
  • Current membership of a professional body
  • Extensive postgraduate experience

Desirable – Qualifications

  • Teaching qualification

Essential – Knowledge & Experience

  • Evidence of recent experience of working with patients who have a cancer diagnosis within the NHS or other equivalent healthcare setting
  • Extended clinical practice underpinned by training and assessment
  • Evidence of contribution towards education and training programmes
  • Evidence of ongoing continuous professional development
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant NHS policy or project specific policy context
  • Understanding / experience of adult / child safeguarding
  • Evidence of leading programmes of education and/or training

Desirable – Knowledge & Experience

  • Research or audit experience
  • Evidence of understanding of Trust Business
  • Experience of working in the Trust previously

Essential – Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, carers, therapies colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team
  • Good IT skills
  • Effective report writing skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Effective organisation and time management skills
  • Advanced specialist training in therapy/adaptation techniques for cancer patients
