The Company

Our client is a premier, well-established Independent Connection Provider (ICP) with a formidable reputation across the UK infrastructure landscape. Known for technical excellence and a safety-first culture, they provide comprehensive turnkey solutions for high-voltage (HV) and low-voltage (LV) grid connections. As the energy transition accelerates, the company is positioned at the forefront of the UK’s shift toward renewable integration and robust utility infrastructure.

The Role

The company is seeking a strategic and high-calibre Business Development Director to spearhead its commercial growth. Reporting directly to the Managing Director, the successful candidate will be responsible for defining and executing the national sales strategy. This is a pivotal leadership position designed for an individual who can bridge the gap between technical engineering capabilities and high-level commercial negotiation. The primary focus is to identify emerging market opportunities, cultivate long-term partnerships with developers and IDNOs, and ensure the company remains the partner of choice for large-scale contestable connection works.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement a robust business development roadmap that aligns with the company’s long-term scaling objectives.
  • Market Positioning: Identify and penetrate key sectors, including renewables (BESS, Solar, EV), industrial developments, and major residential schemes.
  • Pipeline Management: Oversee the full sales lifecycle, from initial lead generation and networking to final contract award, ensuring a healthy and diversified order book.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Act as the senior commercial face of the business, building influential relationships with developers, consultants, local authorities, and DNOs.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Pre-Construction and Estimating teams to ensure bids are commercially viable, technically sound, and aligned with client expectations.
  • Reporting: Provide regular, data-driven insights to the Managing Director regarding market trends, competitor activity, and revenue forecasts.

The Candidate

The ideal candidate will be a seasoned commercial leader with a deep-rooted understanding of the UK utility or power distribution sector.

Experience & Skills Required

  • Industry Expertise: A proven track record in a senior business development or commercial role within an ICP, IDNO, or a major utility contractor.
  • Network: An established network of contacts within the UK property development, renewable energy, or infrastructure sectors.
  • Commercial Acumen: Exceptional negotiation skills with the ability to navigate complex NEC or JCT contracts.
  • Technical Literacy: A strong grasp of the contestable works market and the regulatory framework surrounding Lloyd's NERS accreditation.
  • Communication: An articulate communicator capable of presenting complex technical solutions to non-technical stakeholders at board level.

What is on Offer

This role represents a significant opportunity to join a stable, respected market leader during a period of unprecedented industry growth. The successful applicant will receive:

  • A highly competitive six-figure salary (dependent on experience).
  • Performance-related executive bonus scheme.
  • Comprehensive benefits package, including a car allowance or premium electric vehicle.
  • Private medical insurance and enhanced pension contributions.
  • The autonomy to shape the commercial future of a leading UK engineering firm.
