Due to continued growth and development, our client, a leading UK manufacturer of commercial vehicle trailers and rigid vehicle bodies, is looking to appoint an experienced Press Shop Manager to join its Stoke-on-Trent manufacturing operation. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced manufacturing leader to take ownership of a key production department within a well-established British engineering manufacturer. The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the press shop, leading the team to achieve production targets while maintaining high standards of quality, safety, productivity and delivery. Previous truck, trailer or commercial vehicle manufacturing experience would be advantageous but is not essential. We are particularly interested in managers from transferable sheet metal, presswork, metal forming, fabrication, automotive, heavy engineering and general manufacturing environments.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Take responsibility for the day-to-day management of the press shop. Lead, manage and develop the production team to achieve required performance levels. Ensure production activities are completed in line with manufacturing schedules and customer delivery requirements. Plan and coordinate labour, materials and resources according to production requirements. Monitor departmental performance against agreed KPIs and production targets. Drive productivity, efficiency and operational performance across the department. Maintain high standards of product quality and workmanship. Ensure Health & Safety procedures and safe working practices are consistently followed. Identify production issues, bottlenecks and resource constraints and implement practical solutions. Work closely with other Production Managers and departments to maintain effective manufacturing flow. Coordinate with Engineering, Quality, Stores, Planning and other operational functions as required. Develop team capability through coaching, training and performance management. Manage absence, conduct, performance and other day-to-day people-management responsibilities. Promote a positive, accountable and performance-driven working environment. Support continuous improvement and identify opportunities to improve processes, productivity, quality and efficiency. Provide clear reporting on production performance, issues and departmental requirements.
THE RIGHT CANDIDATE We are looking for an experienced manufacturing or production leader with a strong practical understanding of press shop, sheet metal, metal forming or comparable engineering/manufacturing processes. The successful candidate will ideally demonstrate: Proven management or senior supervisory experience within an engineering or manufacturing environment. Strong people-management and leadership capability. Experience managing production teams within a busy manufacturing operation. Good understanding of presswork, sheet metal, metal forming or comparable manufacturing processes. Experience working to production schedules, targets and deadlines. Strong understanding of manufacturing Health & Safety and quality requirements. Ability to manage people, resources and competing production priorities. Experience monitoring and improving operational performance. Strong problem-solving and decision-making ability. A hands-on management style with the ability to engage directly with production teams. Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively across multiple departments. Experience driving continuous improvement, productivity or process improvements would be advantageous.
RELEVANT INDUSTRY BACKGROUNDS Direct truck and trailer manufacturing experience is not required. We would welcome applications from experienced managers within sheet metal manufacturing, presswork, metal forming, automotive, commercial vehicles, fabrication and welding, heavy engineering, machinery and equipment manufacturing, structural or architectural metalwork and general engineering/manufacturing. These are consistent with the transferable backgrounds identified in the original brief. The important factor is having the management experience, manufacturing knowledge and transferable understanding of press shop and metal-forming processes required to effectively lead the department.
