Alexander Ross Holdings Group (Unico, The Scottish Fine Soaps Company) are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Operations Manager to oversee daily business operations, optimise processes, and lead a dynamic team. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in ensuring operational efficiency, maintaining high standards of quality, and supporting organisational growth.
Salary: £60-70k p.a. depending on experience
Responsibilities:
- End-to-end distribution operations across two sites, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant operations that meet customer and business objectives.
- Reporting to the Board of Directors, the role provides strategic leadership while remaining hands-on during critical operational periods.
- Manage a team of 50 staff, over 2 sites (1 mile apart) – both manufacturing and distribution.
- Drive operational performance, productivity, and engagement through effective leadership and clear accountability.
- Fleet management.
- Warehouse and distribution (own delivery fleet of 14 vehicles + carriers).
- Carrier management and performance KPIs.
- Inventory accuracy, cycle counting, stock-loss prevention.
- Warehouse layout optimisation, picking strategy, space utilisation.
- H&S for warehouse operations including forklift operations, manual handling, racking inspections.
- Overseeing daily production scheduling and output targets.
- Coordinating stock movements between sites.
- Driving engineering solutions and resolving technical issues.
- Provide oversight of maintenance strategy (preventive, predictive, and reactive).
- Manage engineering teams and external contractors.
- Ensure customer expectations are met in terms of OTIF, manufacturing quality and internal KPI’s.
- Ensure compliance with all company accreditations – ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 + Zero to landfill.
- Accountability for site safety performance (RIDDOR, near misses, audits).
- Action planning following audits or H&S incidents.
- Implementation of risk assessments (RA) & Safe Systems of Work (SSoW).
- Oversight of engineering safety compliance.
- Maintain the team, including annual reviews, training and development.
- Be willing and able to flex from strategic thinking to helping the operators during peak periods.
- Implement continual improvement projects for both distribution and manufacturing, including short term and longer term projects.
- Lead and deliver continuous improvement initiatives across manufacturing and distribution.
- Drive a cultural shift from on-the-job learning to structured, documented processes.
- Standardise processes across sites and develop: SOPs, Work Instructions, Checklists and visual standards.
- Apply Lean / Six Sigma principles to improve efficiency, quality, and cost.
- Maintenance strategy oversight (preventive, predictive, reactive).
Experience and skills:
- Experience of manufacturing and distribution.
- Good working knowledge of ERP systems, including inventory management.
- Knowledge of Lean / Six Sigma methodology, qualifications would be an advantage.
- Strong people leadership across multi-site environments.
- Experience developing and implementing operational processes and procedures.
- Sound working knowledge of Health & Safety management systems.
- Experience working within ISO-accredited environments.
