POSITION SUMMARY

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced legal professional to join the Commercial & Legal function as Head of Legal.

Reporting directly to the Commercial & Legal Director, you will lead and develop the Legal team, ensuring the delivery of high-quality legal support across the business.

You will play a key role in supporting commercial objectives while managing legal risk, providing practical and commercially focused advice across a broad range of activities including commercial contracting, compliance, corporate matters and strategic projects.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Lead, coach and develop the Legal team, fostering a high-performance culture.
  • Act as a trusted legal advisor to stakeholders across Commercial, Procurement, Finance, Marketing, Operations, Engineering and Human Resources.
  • Provide legal support across all commercial, corporate and compliance activities.
  • Negotiate, draft and review a wide range of commercial agreements and contracts.
  • Ensure company standard agreements safeguard business interests while supporting efficient contracting processes.
  • Monitor developments in UK and overseas legislation, assessing business impact and implementing appropriate actions.
  • Manage external legal advisors and outsourced legal support where required.
  • Advise the business on legal risks, opportunities and regulatory compliance matters.
  • Draft, review and update legal policies and procedures, delivering guidance and training where appropriate.
  • Oversee property-related legal matters, including lease renewals and landlord relationships.
  • Support the Commercial & Legal Director with departmental budgeting and expenditure management.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, internal controls and regulatory requirements.
  • Champion company values and promote a culture of integrity, collaboration and accountability.
  • WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL
  • Qualified to practise as a Solicitor or Barrister in Scotland.
  • Strong academic background and legal qualification.
  • Proven experience operating in a senior in-house legal role or equivalent.
  • Effective leadership skills with the ability to coach, mentor and develop others.
  • Excellent commercial awareness and sound business judgement.
  • Strong negotiation and contract management skills.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence at all levels.
  • Ability to balance legal risk with commercial objectives.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise multiple demands.
  • High levels of professionalism, integrity and attention to detail.
  • Experience managing relationships with external legal advisors and internal stakeholders.
