We are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity and are looking to recruit an Electronics Design Engineer who will be required to work within the Engineering team and reporting to the Hardware Team Lead.
This is a hardware design role responsible for the electronic design and PCB layout of the company’s Battery Management Systems (BMS) and associated battery-pack electronics.
Using Altium Designer, the postholder takes designs from concept and requirements through schematic capture, component selection, multilayer PCB layout, prototyping and bring-up, to validated designs ready for volume production.
The role applies sound design-for-manufacture, design-for-test and EMC practice, and will work closely with the firmware, test, mechanical, production and quality teams through the New Product Introduction (NPI) process, and ensures designs meet the relevant safety and regulatory standards for battery products.
A knowledge of firmware development is an advantage.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- The below list is not exhaustive, but the main duties and responsibilities will be:
- Design BMS and battery-pack electronics – analog, digital and mixed-signal circuitry including cell monitoring/balancing, protection, current sensing and power management
- Produce high-quality multilayer PCB layouts in Altium Designer, including component placement, routing, layer stack-up, power/ground planes and controlled impedance where required
- Capture requirements and translate them into schematics, design specifications and verifiable acceptance criteria
- Generate and check manufacturing data packs – Gerbers, drill files, pick-and-place, assembly drawings and BOMs
- Select components and manage the BOM with regard to availability, lifecycle/obsolescence, cost and second sourcing
- Apply Design for Manufacture (DFM), Design for Test (DFT) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles to ensure robust, manufacturable and testable designs
- Design for EMC/EMI compliance, signal integrity and power integrity, and support pre-compliance and formal compliance testing
- Build, bring up, debug and validate prototypes on the bench using oscilloscopes, DMMs, power supplies and other lab equipment
- Prepare and maintain design documentation, schematics and layout data, and manage design changes under formal change control (ECN)
- Plan and participate in design reviews, and contribute to the maintenance of component libraries and design standards
- Work with the firmware/embedded team on hardware interfaces, board bring-up and debug
- Ensure designs meet relevant safety, regulatory and product standards (e. g. CE marking, EMC, LVD and battery safety standards)
- Support the transition of designs from prototype into volume production, working with production, test and the supply chain through NPI
- Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours
- The postholder will possess a range of the following knowledge, skills, and behaviours:
- BEng/BSc in Electronic Engineering or equivalent qualification/experience
- Proven experience in electronics design across analog, digital and mixed-signal circuitry
- Essential – strong Altium Designer skills covering schematic capture and multilayer PCB layout
- Knowledge of firmware/embedded development (an advantage)
- Experience of Design for Manufacture (DFM), Design for Test (DFT) and Design for Assembly (DFA) (an advantage)
- EMC/EMI design knowledge and awareness of compliance and pre-compliance testing (an advantage)
- Component selection, BOM management and library/part maintenance
- Familiarity with common communication interfaces such as I²C, SPI, UART, CAN or BLE
- Understanding of PCB manufacturing and assembly processes and their design implications
- Strong bench skills – prototyping, board bring-up and fault-finding with standard lab equipment
- Awareness of relevant standards – CE marking, EMC Directive, and battery safety such as IEC 62133 and UN 38.3 (desirable)
- Good understanding of electronics fundamentals, and disciplined use of version and change control
- Strong problem-solving skills and excellent attention to detail
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, with good record-keeping
- Highly organised and self-motivated, able to work both autonomously and as part of a team
- Core Soft Skills
The postholder will be required to demonstrate the following key core soft skills for their band:
- Commitment
- Strong work ethic
- Effective Communication
- Teamwork
- Embodies the organisations core values
- Problem-solving
- Leadership
- Interpersonal skills
- Negotiation and conflict resolution
- Project Management
- Company pension via salary sacrifice
- Free on-site parking
- Free tea & coffee
- Uniform provided
- 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
- Early finish on a Friday
