An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Electrical Engineer to join a clean water utility on a long-term contract. You will operate as the sole Electrical Engineer in a lean in-house M&E function, working closely with mechanical colleagues and acting as the intelligent client across a portfolio of clean water assets. This role offers a high level of autonomy and visibility and will suit an engineer comfortable working independently and influencing technical outcomes.

The position sits at design authority / assurance level rather than detailed design. Candidates must, however, have a solid electrical design background and be confident reviewing and shaping design solutions produced by delivery partners. Framework contractors are responsible for detailed design and construction, while you will provide governance, challenge, and technical direction on major capital schemes, including a significant WTW upgrade project.

Key Accountabilities

  • Act as the internal electrical technical authority
  • Provide electrical input, leadership, and assurance across capital projects
  • Review and challenge EICA and electrical designs from external contractors
  • Develop outline and functional electrical solutions
  • Support electrical and generator upgrade strategies
  • Undertake site assessments to evaluate asset condition and identify improvement needs
  • Provide oversight during construction, installation, and commissioning
  • Apply HV engineering expertise, including protection and integration studies
  • Prepare specifications and contribute to tender reviews and contractor selection
  • Carry out feasibility studies and produce option appraisals
  • Support and review internal electrical standards
  • Liaise with internal teams and external stakeholders to support capital delivery
  • Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and environmental requirements
  • Provide technical support during incidents and operational events when required

Background & Experience

  • Proven electrical engineering experience within water, utilities, or comparable industrial sectors
  • Previous experience in a consultancy or contractor-led design environment
  • Comfortable operating as an Electrical Design Engineer / intelligent client
  • High-voltage experience is essential
  • Able to work autonomously as the only electrical specialist
  • Practical, site-experienced engineer with strong judgement
