We are seeking an experienced Senior Design Manager to join a leading engineering and infrastructure business, supporting the successful delivery of a diverse portfolio of major projects. This is an excellent opportunity for a design management professional with experience in multidisciplinary engineering environments who enjoys leading teams, driving technical excellence, and delivering innovative, buildable solutions from concept through to construction.
The Role
You will take ownership of the design phase across multiple projects, ensuring technically compliant, cost-effective, and deliverable solutions that meet client requirements, programme objectives, and industry standards. You will work closely with engineering disciplines, project teams, clients, and key stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary design teams throughout the project lifecycle.
- Champion Health & Safety in Design, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, standards, and industry best practice.
- Identify, manage, and communicate design risks and residual hazards to all stakeholders.
- Develop and manage Design Management Plans and provide regular progress updates.
- Ensure design outputs are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
- Monitor design costs, resource allocation, and overall project performance.
- Attend and contribute to programme, technical, and project meetings.
- Drive value engineering and identify opportunities to improve efficiency while maintaining quality.
- Provide technical support during construction, commissioning, and handover where required.
- Ensure all engineering deliverables comply with relevant specifications, quality assurance procedures, and industry standards.
- Support sustainability initiatives by helping to reduce embodied and operational carbon within engineering solutions.
- Build strong working relationships with clients, project partners, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Deliver an excellent level of customer service and maintain a collaborative, solutions-focused approach.
- Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and high standards in all internal and external communications.
Essential Requirements
- Significant experience managing multidisciplinary engineering design within a design-and-build environment.
- Degree qualified in an engineering discipline.
- Chartered Engineer (or equivalent professional accreditation).
- APM Project Fundamentals Qualification (or equivalent).
- Proven ability to lead and motivate multidisciplinary teams to deliver projects safely, on time, within budget, and to quality expectations.
- Strong understanding of CDM Regulations and construction Health & Safety.
- Experience delivering large, complex infrastructure or engineering projects.
- Excellent strategic, technical, operational, and leadership skills.
- Broad understanding of engineering disciplines, including civil, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, process, or related infrastructure engineering.
- Strong presentation and stakeholder management skills with the ability to communicate technical information clearly.
Desirable
- APM Project Management Qualification or working towards achieving it.
- Experience working within large or international organisations.
- Experience managing geographically dispersed or remote project teams.
- Background within the water or wastewater sector, or similar regulated infrastructure industries.
- Knowledge of BIM processes and digital engineering techniques.
- A collaborative mindset with a passion for innovation and continuous improvement.
