I'm currently supporting a leading engineering contractor within the UK water sector in the search for a Principal Electrical Design Engineer to join their growing engineering team.
The successful candidate will have extensive experience delivering electrical designs within the water and wastewater sector and will come from a contractor, supplier, systems integration or design-and-build background.
The Opportunity
As Principal Electrical Design Engineer, you will act as the technical authority for electrical engineering activities across multiple projects and programmes. You will lead engineering strategy, oversee technical governance, mentor engineering teams and ensure the successful delivery of complex water infrastructure projects. This role combines hands-on technical expertise with leadership, stakeholder engagement and engineering management responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the electrical engineering function across multiple water and wastewater projects.
- Act as Technical Authority for electrical design activities.
- Approve and review complex engineering deliverables.
- Develop engineering standards, procedures and design methodologies.
- Lead technical design reviews and risk assessments.
- Provide technical leadership throughout design, construction and commissioning phases.
- Support business development, bid activities and client engagement.
- Manage key technical interfaces with clients, contractors and suppliers.
- Mentor and develop Senior, Graduate and Junior Engineers.
- Drive continuous improvement and engineering best practice throughout the organisation.
- Support resource planning and engineering capability growth.
Essential Requirements
- Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Extensive experience delivering electrical design solutions within the UK water and wastewater sector.
- Significant experience across both clean water and wastewater treatment projects.
- Must have experience working for a contractor, systems integrator, specialist supplier, EPC contractor or design-and-build organisation.
- Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary engineering teams and complex project delivery.
- Strong expertise in:
- LV power distribution
- MCCs and motor control systems
- VSDs
- Standby generation systems
- Electrical protection systems
- Earthing and bonding systems
- Thorough understanding of BS7671, IEC standards, CDM regulations and water industry specifications.
- Strong client-facing and stakeholder management experience.
Desirable
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
- Experience leading engineering delivery on AMP programmes and major water frameworks.
- Knowledge of ICA and control system integration.
- Experience supporting tendering, business development and engineering strategy.
- Proven track record of mentoring and developing engineering teams.
